Road Projects Become Tinubu's New Weapon Against Insecurity, Says Umahi

The Tinubu administration’s Road Projects have been presented as more than an infrastructure programme, with Minister of Works David Umahi arguing they form part of a broader strategy against Insecurity. His remarks have renewed debate over whether improved transportation networks can serve not only economic development but also national security, as many Nigerians continue to seek lasting solutions to persistent security challenges.

Umahi said the administration is deliberately constructing and rehabilitating strategic highways to connect previously isolated communities, improve access to rural areas and enable faster deployment of security personnel during emergencies. According to him, communities that are easily accessible become more difficult for criminal groups to dominate because government presence and commercial activities increase alongside improved transportation.

The minister further argued that improved road infrastructure encourages trade, agriculture and investment while reducing the geographical isolation that criminals often exploit. His position reflects the administration’s view that infrastructure development should complement conventional security operations rather than replace them, making economic growth and national security mutually reinforcing objectives.

Tinubu: Federal Government Says Better Roads Will Open Up Isolated Communities

Beyond the original remarks, recent government statements have consistently linked major highway projects to broader national development goals. Officials have maintained that several strategic road corridors are intended to strengthen regional connectivity, improve logistics and support the movement of security personnel and emergency services across different parts of the country.

Security analysts have long argued that infrastructure alone cannot eliminate violent crime, since insecurity is also driven by economic, social and governance challenges. However, improved transportation networks are widely recognised as valuable support systems that can reduce response times, strengthen state presence in remote locations and stimulate economic opportunities that may contribute to long-term stability. Whether these Road Projects ultimately translate into measurable reductions in Insecurity will depend on effective coordination with intelligence gathering, policing, military operations and community engagement.

As construction continues across several federal highway corridors, the administration will likely face growing public scrutiny over whether the promised security and economic benefits become visible on the ground. OGM News Nigeria will continue monitoring both the progress of the projects and their practical impact on communities across the country.
