A fresh warning from Primate Elijah Ayodele has added another layer of drama to the growing legal battle over historical U.S. investigative records connected to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Ayodele was quoted as saying, “For the sake of Nigeria’s progress, Tinubu should do everything possible to stop the FBI from releasing these documents because it could cost him a lot.” The comment comes as Tinubu’s legal team has asked a United States federal court to prevent the release of records sought under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).
A Courtroom Mystery With Political Consequences
The controversy centres on requests for FBI and Drug Enforcement Administration records relating to historical investigations involving Tinubu, including requested FBI interview records from the 1992–1993 period. The case has been running for years, with a U.S. transparency activist seeking access to records that federal agencies have partly withheld or redacted. In August 2026, the FBI asked the court to allow it to privately explain some of its reasons for withholding information, citing concerns including sensitive law-enforcement methods and possible risks to individuals.
Tinubu has now intervened in the case and is asking the court to maintain the redactions and withholding of certain records, arguing that privacy protections under U.S. law apply. The FBI has also submitted sensitive material to the judge for private review, meaning the courtroom drama has reached the stage where even the documents being discussed are partly hidden from public view.
Ayodele’s Warning Raises the Political Temperature
Ayodele’s latest intervention effectively turns an already complicated legal dispute into a political warning, suggesting that the eventual handling of the documents could have consequences for Tinubu and, by extension, Nigeria’s political environment. His comments should be understood as his prediction or opinion, rather than evidence that the documents contain wrongdoing by the President.
For now, the legal process remains the real centre of the story. The existence of an FBI investigation or record does not by itself establish criminal wrongdoing, and the ultimate significance of any withheld material cannot responsibly be determined until the court rules on what may be released and what must remain protected. With President Donald J.
