Ogboru has once again forced himself into the center of Delta State politics after emerging as the governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, in a decisive primary election victory that is already generating excitement, criticism and strategic panic among rival political camps ahead of the 2027 elections. The development, announced at the ADC State Secretariat in Asaba, has revived debates over political longevity, voter loyalty and whether Delta’s opposition politics is finally preparing for a serious realignment.
ADC Declares Great Ogboru Winner of Delta Governorship Primary
The ADC primary election concluded on Monday after party members voted across positions covering the State House of Assembly, House of Representatives, Senate and governorship categories. According to the chairman of the party’s primary election committee, Patrick Williams, the process remained peaceful and orderly throughout the exercise, with all aspirants reportedly given equal opportunities in line with the party’s constitution and electoral guidelines.
In the governorship contest, Chief Great Ogboru defeated Dr Emmanuel Unuafe by a wide margin after polling 38,151 votes against Unuafe’s 1,182 votes. Williams declared Ogboru winner after confirming he secured the highest number of valid votes cast. The announcement immediately sparked celebrations among supporters gathered at the party secretariat, with many describing the result as proof that the ADC intends to challenge more dominant political structures in Delta State.
Williams further urged party members and aspirants to avoid division after the primaries, stressing that collective party interest should outweigh personal ambition. He also commended security agencies, delegates and election officials for contributing to what the party described as a transparent process. For ADC loyalists, the successful conduct of the primaries became an opportunity to project the party as organized and prepared for the political battles expected in 2027.
ADC Leaders Call for Unity After Ogboru’s Victory in Delta
Ogboru’s emergence is significant partly because of his long-standing visibility within Delta politics. Over the years, he has remained one of the state’s most recognizable opposition figures, repeatedly contesting governorship elections and building a loyal political base across parts of the state. His latest victory under the ADC platform now raises fresh questions about whether smaller political parties could gain stronger influence as voter frustration with mainstream parties continues to grow nationally.
Recent political developments across Nigeria have also shown increasing movement among politicians seeking alternative platforms ahead of future elections. Analysts note that internal disputes within larger parties, combined with economic pressures facing many Nigerians, have contributed to growing public interest in opposition parties promising reform and accountability. While the ADC remains less dominant compared to larger national parties, Ogboru’s candidacy could help the party attract greater visibility, financial backing and grassroots mobilization in Delta State.
Still, critics argue that Delta politics continues to recycle familiar names and long-established political actors rather than introducing a completely fresh generation of leadership. On social media, some observers humorously described the primary as “another sequel in Delta’s endless political cinema,” while supporters countered that experience remains necessary in navigating the state’s complicated political environment. The debate reflects a broader national conversation about whether Nigerian voters prefer tested political veterans or entirely new faces promising radical change.
As preparations for 2027 gradually intensify, Ogboru’s ADC victory has already transformed what many initially considered a quiet opposition exercise into one of Delta State’s earliest major political talking points. OGM News Nigeria understands that attention will now shift toward possible alliances, defections and strategic calculations among rival political blocs as the governorship race slowly begins to take shape.
