Former CAN President Ayo Oritsejafor has issued one of the strongest criticisms yet of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, declaring that the president should not seek another term in the 2027 Election. The former President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) argued that the current administration has failed to meet the expectations of Nigerians and has struggled to address the country’s growing economic and social challenges.
Speaking during a television interview, Oritsejafor painted a bleak picture of the nation’s condition, asserting that many Nigerians are facing worsening hardship and diminishing confidence in the country’s future. While stopping short of explicitly demanding the president’s resignation, he maintained that a candid assessment of the administration’s performance should lead to a decision not to seek re-election.
Ayo Oritsejafor Backs Calls for Tinubu to Step Aside Before 2027
According to Ayo Oritsejafor, effective leadership should produce visible improvements in the lives of citizens, particularly in areas such as economic stability, security, and national development. He argued that many Nigerians are struggling under current conditions and expressed concern that the country appears to be moving in the wrong direction.
The cleric further stated that if he had the opportunity to meet President Tinubu personally, he would advise him either to refrain from contesting the 2027 Election or to identify individuals capable of delivering the level of transformation Nigerians expect. Oritsejafor emphasized that public office should ultimately be judged by measurable results rather than political rhetoric.
His comments also aligned with recent arguments from opposition figures who have questioned whether the current administration has done enough to justify another term in office.
Former CAN President Suggests 2027 Needs a Different Driver
Beyond his criticism of government performance, Ayo Oritsejafor raised concerns about the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral process ahead of the 2027 Election. He suggested that many citizens increasingly view election outcomes as predetermined, a perception he believes undermines confidence in democratic institutions.
The former CAN President argued that democracy depends on public trust in the electoral system and warned that widespread skepticism could weaken citizen participation. He maintained that reforms aimed at improving transparency and accountability would be essential to restoring confidence in future elections.
Political analysts note that discussions surrounding the 2027 Election are already gaining momentum despite the vote being years away. Economic conditions, security concerns, governance performance, and electoral reforms are expected to dominate the political conversation as parties and stakeholders begin positioning themselves for the contest.
Oritsejafor also reiterated that religious leaders have a responsibility to speak on issues affecting national welfare. According to him, the church must continue to hold leaders accountable and advocate for policies that improve the lives of ordinary citizens regardless of political affiliation
As debate over the 2027 Election intensifies, Ayo Oritsejafor has added a powerful and controversial voice to the discussion. Whether his criticism influences the broader political landscape remains to be seen, but his remarks have undoubtedly intensified scrutiny of the government’s performance and the road ahead for Nigeria’s democracy.
