Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos has been handed a major political assignment as the All Progressives Congress (APC) names him South-West Zonal Campaign Coordinator for President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election campaign. The appointment was contained in the Presidency’s announcement of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, giving Sanwo-Olu responsibility for coordinating campaign activities across Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ondo and Ekiti.
Sanwo-Olu As the South-West Campaign Boss
Sanwo-Olu’s appointment is hardly a small political errand. As Chairman of the South-West Governors’ Forum, he already occupies a position that gives him considerable access to governors and political stakeholders across the region. The new assignment means that, in addition to governing Lagos, he will be expected to help organise the APC’s presidential campaign structure across the six South-West states.
In the official campaign arrangement, Tinubu is chairman of the council, Vice-President Kashim Shettima is vice-chairman, while former Zamfara Governor Abdulaziz Yari is director-general. Sanwo-Olu therefore joins a sizeable political team that appears determined to ensure that the 2027 contest does not arrive at the APC office without plenty of paperwork, meetings, mobilisation and, naturally, political mathematics.
Sanwo-Olu Gets Major Role as Tinubu’s Re-election Battle Takes Shape
The Lagos governor is not entirely new to this particular political exercise. Reports say he previously chaired the APC Governorship Campaign Council in Ondo State during the 2020 and 2024 governorship elections, campaigns in which the party secured victories. His latest assignment consequently places that experience on a much larger regional stage.
Satirically speaking, Sanwo-Olu may now need to add a new item to his official timetable: finding enough hours in the day to coordinate six states while Lagos continues to demand its own attention. His expected duties include engaging political, labour, student, artisan and business groups, mobilising support and communicating the Tinubu administration’s achievements. In other words, the campaign diary may soon require its own campaign diary.
The appointment also signals the importance the APC attaches to the South-West as the 2027 presidential contest approaches. For now, the political machinery has been formally assembled and Babajide has received his regional assignment. OGM News NG will continue to watch how the campaign structure develops, who joins the mobilisation effort and what political surprises emerge as Nigeria moves closer to the 2027 election season.
