Bayo Onanuga Calls “United States of Nigeria” Report Fake News

Bayo Onanuga has strongly dismissed viral claims suggesting that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is planning a constitutional amendment under a supposed initiative called “Project True Federation,” which allegedly includes renaming Nigeria the “United States of Nigeria” and abolishing Sharia Law. The Presidency spokesperson described the reports as entirely false and misleading, warning that they are designed to create political tension ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The clarification comes amid growing circulation of the claims across social media platforms, prompting public concern and debate before being officially refuted. Bayo Onanuga emphasized that no such policy or legislative proposal exists within the federal government’s current agenda.

Bayo Onanuga on Fake News Claims

Bayo Onanuga stated that the alleged constitutional amendment narrative is not connected to any official government process or documentation. He explained that constitutional changes in Nigeria follow a formal legislative procedure involving the National Assembly and broad public consultation, none of which includes the reported proposal.

Bayo Onanuga urged Nigerians to disregard the viral content and avoid spreading unverified political information online. He noted that misinformation often intensifies during politically sensitive periods, particularly as the country approaches election cycles.
According to him, the administration remains focused on governance priorities and verified policy actions rather than reacting to fabricated narratives circulating on social media.

Misinformation and Political Sensitivity

Bayo Onanuga further warned that false political stories can easily spread online and influence public perception if not promptly addressed. He stressed the importance of responsible communication and media literacy among citizens.
Analysts note that Nigeria’s digital information space has become increasingly vulnerable to misinformation, especially during election-related periods. False claims about governance and constitutional reforms can quickly gain traction, creating unnecessary tension if not corrected.

Experts also highlight that official government responses play a key role in controlling misinformation, ensuring that public discourse remains grounded in verified facts rather than speculation.

For now, Bayo Onanuga maintains that the “Project True Federation” claim is completely unfounded, urging Nigerians to rely on credible official sources for accurate information on national policy matters
