Waterway Safety No Be Optional Again Tinubu Tells NIWA ,NEMA As Sokoto Boat Tragedy Emerge

The deadly boat tragedy for Gorau community, Goronyo Local Government Area of Sokoto State, don push waterway safety enter another serious national conversation, as President Bola Tinubu don direct the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) and National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to work with Sokoto State Government to prevent another tragedy and make safety rules work for real. Reports say dozens of people died after the overloaded boat overturned on August 20, with different early reports putting the death toll between the 40s and more than 50 as rescue and recovery efforts continued.

Waterway Safety Rules Orders By Tinubu After Deadly Sokoto Mishap

The President expressed sadness over the tragedy and sent condolences to the families of those wey lose their loved ones. According to reports, he specifically directed NIWA and NEMA to work closely with Sokoto State authorities, strengthen waterway safety standards and make sure existing safety rules are strictly enforced.

For the satirical side of the matter, one thing be clear: water no dey sign attendance sheet before e become dangerous. If boat operator overload boat, passengers no wear life jackets and regulators only appear after tragedy happen, the river no go suddenly develop sympathy. Earlier NEMA records from the 2025 Goronyo tragedy also showed how joint efforts involving NEMA, NIWA, SEMA, local authorities and community divers became necessary after another deadly mishap.

Tinubu To Waterway Agencies: “Make Safety No Wait Until Boat Don Capsize

The latest tragedy has again exposed concerns around overcrowding, inadequate safety measures and weak enforcement on Nigerian waterways. Reuters reported that witnesses said more than 70 people may have been aboard the boat, while other reports gave varying figures as authorities continued confirming casualties.

And government response no suppose end for condolence message and emergency meeting. Sokoto State had already taken some preventive steps after previous accidents, including distribution of motorised boats and 2,000 life jackets to riverine communities in 2025, alongside training for boat operators and warnings against overloading. The lesson from all these incidents be simple: safety regulation wey everybody obey only after tragedy don already happen is regulation wey arrive late.

OGM News Pidgin go continue to monitor the Sokoto boat tragedy and the government response as more verified information comes out. For now, the big question remain whether this latest directive go become real enforcement on the waterway safety—or another official instruction wey everybody go remember only when another boat accident happen.
