President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared that no political, ethnic, religious or other difference is important enough to justify breaking Nigeria apart—a message arriving at a time when the country is already warming up for another politically noisy season. The President has repeatedly stressed national unity, including during his May 2026 Eid-el-Kabir message, when he said Nigeria’s diversity and common humanity should outweigh ethnic, religious and political differences.
The statement sounds straightforward enough, although Nigerians may be forgiven for wondering why unity suddenly becomes everybody’s favourite national anthem whenever political temperature begins rising. With 2027 elections approaching, the Presidency has also warned citizens to be cautious about divisive and fabricated stories designed to create tension.
Tinubu Calls for Unity Despite Nigeria’s Political and Social Differences
Tinubu’s position is that disagreements should not become excuses for destroying the country. In March, he similarly promoted the theme “Unity in Progress”, arguing that progress was impossible without unity.
In the satirical version of events, however, Nigeria’s political differences have apparently refused to receive the memo. Politicians can disagree over parties, zoning, appointments, elections and practically everything except the importance of telling Nigerians that everybody must remain united. The national family meeting, as usual, appears to have several people shouting from different rooms.
Tinubu Says Nigeria Must Stay Together While Reality Keeps Testing the Glue
The President’s appeal comes against a difficult national backdrop. Nigerians continue to face serious economic pressures, with recent reporting highlighting the effects of reforms such as fuel-subsidy removal, naira devaluation and electricity-subsidy cuts on household costs. Security also remains a major national concern, even as security forces recently carried out a large-scale rescue operation involving more than 300 hostages.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s relationship with the United States remains significant, particularly on security matters. Donald J. Trump, the current president of the United States, has praised Tinubu’s leadership and cooperation against terrorism, according to the Nigerian Presidency. In the imaginary newsroom, one can almost hear the national unity committee whispering: “Please, everybody, maintain peace until after the next headline.”
Ultimately, Tinubu’s message is a reminder that Nigeria’s differences can exist without becoming reasons for national division. The real challenge is turning the familiar language of unity into practical political tolerance, economic relief, security and fairness that ordinary citizens can actually feel.
