Senator Opeyemi Bamidele Declares Electoral System Better Amid Ongoing Criticism

Senator Opeyemi Bamidele has offered an optimistic assessment of Nigeria’s electoral system, arguing that the country’s democratic process is steadily improving as compliance with electoral laws and procedures continues to increase. The Senate Leader made the remarks after casting his vote in Iyin-Ekiti, where he praised the conduct of electoral stakeholders and pointed to signs of growing democratic maturity.

His comments come at a time when Nigeria’s elections remain the subject of intense public scrutiny, with citizens, political parties, and civil society groups continuing to debate the effectiveness of recent electoral reforms. Despite lingering concerns in some quarters, Opeyemi Bamidele maintained that noticeable progress is being made.

ELECTORAL SYSTEM

Speaking at Eyo-Lori Ward 2, Unit 003 in Iyin-Ekiti, Opeyemi Bamidele commended the level of compliance demonstrated by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), political parties, security agencies, and voters. According to him, adherence to the provisions of the amended Electoral Act reflects the growing effectiveness of reforms introduced to strengthen the electoral process.

The Senate Leader noted that increased public awareness of electoral offences has played a significant role in encouraging responsible conduct during elections. He argued that citizens are becoming more conscious of the consequences of violating electoral laws, creating an environment that promotes transparency and accountability.
While acknowledging that no electoral system is perfect, Opeyemi Bamidele stressed that gradual improvements should not be overlooked. He suggested that democratic development is a continuous process that requires consistent evaluation and adjustment rather than expectations of immediate perfection.

DEMOCRATIC REFORMS

The remarks by Opeyemi Bamidele also underscore the broader national conversation about democratic reforms in Nigeria. Over the years, amendments to electoral laws have sought to improve voter confidence, strengthen election administration, and reduce opportunities for malpractice.

Supporters of recent reforms argue that technological innovations, stricter legal provisions, and greater civic awareness are contributing to a more credible electoral environment. However, critics continue to call for further improvements in areas such as voter education, election logistics, dispute resolution, and enforcement of electoral laws.

For Opeyemi Bamidele, the focus remains on continuous improvement. He expressed optimism that a comprehensive nationwide assessment of recent electoral experiences would provide valuable insights for future reforms, helping Nigeria build a stronger and more resilient democratic system.

As discussions about electoral credibility continue, Opeyemi Bamidele believes the country’s electoral system is moving in the right direction. Whether that optimism is shared across the political spectrum may vary, but the broader consensus remains that democratic progress depends on sustained reforms, active citizen participation, and unwavering commitment to the rule of law.
