Putin Backs Fully Independent Palestinian State, Says Lasting Middle East Peace Cannot Ignore Palestinian Rights

Russian President Vladimir Putin has reaffirmed Russia’s support for the establishment of a fully independent Palestinian state, insisting that the long-standing Israeli-Palestinian conflict cannot achieve a lasting resolution without Palestinian statehood. Speaking amid continuing international concerns over the Middle East, Putin maintained that the creation of a sovereign Palestinian state remains central to Russia’s diplomatic position. His remarks have once again placed the Palestinian question firmly on the international political agenda, reminding world leaders that peace cannot simply be announced at diplomatic meetings and expected to appear magically.

Putin’s position comes as international efforts to address the conflict continue to face serious political, territorial and humanitarian challenges. While several governments have expressed support for a two-state solution, disagreements over borders, security, settlements and the future governance of Palestinian territories remain significant obstacles. For Moscow, however, the message appears straightforward: a peace arrangement without a fully established Palestinian state would be like completing a house while deliberately leaving out its foundation.

Putin Reaffirms Russia’s Longstanding Support for Palestinian Independence

President Putin has repeatedly maintained that Russia supports the establishment of an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel. During his October 29, 2026, remarks, he reiterated that the two-state principle remains the appropriate framework for resolving the Palestinian question. He also emphasized that the international community should not allow developments elsewhere in the region to distract attention from the suffering of Palestinians.

Russia’s position is not entirely new. The Soviet Union recognised the State of Palestine in 1988, and Moscow has consistently maintained its support for Palestinian statehood since then. Putin has also argued that a lasting settlement should be based on relevant United Nations resolutions. In diplomatic terms, Russia appears determined to keep the Palestinian statehood question on the negotiating table, even when other international priorities compete for attention.

Two-State Solution Remains Central to Middle East Peace Debate

President Putin’s remarks reinforce the two-state solution, which envisages the establishment of an independent Palestinian state existing alongside Israel. The proposal has long received international support, including from the United Nations and numerous governments. However, turning the diplomatic principle into reality remains difficult, with disagreements over territorial boundaries, Israeli settlements, security arrangements and Palestinian political divisions continuing to complicate negotiations.

Meanwhile, the international community faces renewed questions about what practical steps will finally transform decades of diplomatic promises into an independent Palestinian state. Putin’s statement adds Russia’s voice to those calling for a political settlement, although declarations of support alone cannot resolve the complicated realities on the ground. After years of speeches, meetings and diplomatic handshakes, Palestinians are still waiting for the promised statehood to become more than a recurring subject at international conferences.

As the debate continues, President Putin’s renewed position places pressure on world leaders to demonstrate whether their support for Palestinian independence can translate into meaningful political action. The question is no longer simply how many countries endorse a two-state solution, but how and when it can become reality.
