PDP Declares End to Crisis as Wike Offers Defectors Path Back Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has extended an olive branch to former members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), urging reconciliation as the party formally declared an end to its internal crisis and shifted attention to preparations for the 2027 general elections.

Speaking at the party’s 108th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja, leaders aligned with the minister emphasised unity, institutional stability, and renewed confidence in the party’s structure. The meeting marked a turning point, with officials asserting that the PDP has moved beyond internal disputes and is now focused on rebuilding trust and strengthening its electoral position.

Wike led PDP Leadership Affirms Legitimacy and Calls for Reconciliation

Addressing party stakeholders, Wike underscored the importance of reclaiming the PDP’s National Secretariat as a symbol of legitimacy, insisting that the current leadership represents the authentic structure of the party. According to him, the ability to convene at the secretariat reinforces the authority of the leadership and signals organisational stability.

Wike also appealed to former members who defected during the period of uncertainty, noting that many departures were driven by concerns over internal cohesion rather than a lack of loyalty. He argued that such individuals should be re-engaged, expressing confidence that improved clarity within the PDP would encourage their return.

Reaffirming his personal commitment, the minister stated that he has remained a loyal member of the PDP since 1998 and has no intention of leaving. He stressed that reconciliation efforts should be prioritised as part of a broader strategy to reposition the party ahead of future elections.

PDP Leadership Declares ‘Era of Uncertainty’ Over

Factional National Chairman, Abdulrahman Mohammed Takushara, declared that the party has entered a new phase defined by strategic planning, consolidation, and electoral preparation. He stated that the leadership is now aligned with constitutional provisions, the Electoral Act, and guidelines issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Takushara emphasised the party’s commitment to conducting transparent and inclusive primaries, noting that internal reforms are being implemented to strengthen democratic processes. He also acknowledged the role of security agencies in safeguarding party assets during the period of internal conflict.

From the Board of Trustees, Chairman Mao Ohuabunwa called for inclusivity and adherence to due process. He stressed that unity must be built on understanding and collective progress, adding that reforms such as electronic membership registration are already underway to enhance transparency and grassroots participation.

PDP NEC Endorses Unity Agenda and 2027 Election Roadmap

Factional National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, dismissed claims of division within the party, insisting that the PDP remains a single, unified entity under its current leadership. He urged the media to avoid narratives suggesting factionalism and announced plans to establish a reconciliation committee to engage stakeholders nationwide.

The NEC, in its communiqué, commended the National Working Committee for stabilising the party and reaffirmed confidence in its leadership. It stated that all internal disagreements would be resolved through established party mechanisms and dialogue.

The committee also adopted a timetable for party primaries in preparation for the 2027 elections, directing members to comply fully with INEC guidelines. Members were urged to maintain discipline, prioritise collective interests, and support ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening the party’s organisational framework.
