Nigeria’s National Grid: Where Prevention Apparently Waits for the Next Collapse

Nigeria’s power sector appears to have perfected a familiar national routine: the grid develops a problem, electricity disappears, explanations begin flying, and everyone suddenly becomes an expert in what went wrong. Our source says the sector remains largely reactive, with grid disturbances repeatedly producing familiar blame games instead of the sustained planning, preventive maintenance and long-term investment needed to make the system resilient. The concern is important because official records show that these disturbances are not isolated accidents but part of a recurring structural problem. NERC recorded 12 national-grid collapses in 2024, while its 2025 Q3 report documented another total collapse on September 10, 2025.

When the Lights Go Out, the Explanations Come On

The Nigerian electricity grid has become something of a reluctant celebrity: whenever it disappears, everybody suddenly wants to explain its behaviour. Sometimes the suspects include equipment failure, transmission-line trips, generation shortfalls, gas constraints, vandalism or system instability. NERC’s records explain that when supply and demand become badly unbalanced, frequency can move outside safe limits, causing generating units to trip and potentially triggering a cascade that ends in partial or total collapse.

The comedy, however, is in what happens afterwards. Instead of Nigerians being able to celebrate a quiet evening because the grid behaved itself, they may find themselves listening to competing explanations over who should receive the national blame medal. In 2024, NERC even convened a public hearing after recurring disturbances, with stakeholders acknowledging equipment failures, obsolete infrastructure, manual grid operations and the need for a smarter, more coordinated system.

From Emergency Repairs to Actual Prevention

There are signs that the authorities recognise the need to change the script. In July 2026, the Federal Government announced fresh investment plans for grid stabilisation and said a Technical Working Committee had been constituted to tackle transmission bottlenecks, ageing infrastructure and recurring collapses. NERC has also identified SCADA and Energy Management System deployment as important tools for improving grid visibility, real-time decision-making and stability.

The challenge is turning announcements into a system that does not wait for failure before remembering maintenance. A TCN planning document set ambitious targets, including reducing annual partial or full grid collapses to one, improving network reliability and achieving comprehensive grid visibility through SCADA. NERC’s 2026 discussions likewise stress sustained reform, stronger enforcement and increased investment. In other words, the sector already knows much of what needs to be done; the real test is whether prevention can finally become routine rather than something remembered immediately after the next blackout.
