MTN CEO Karl Toriola has stirred debate among telecom subscribers after declaring that genuinely unlimited mobile data services rarely exist anywhere in the world unless customers are prepared to pay exceptionally high prices.
The Chief Executive Officer of MTN Nigeria made the remarks while discussing the economics of mobile internet services, arguing that many public expectations about unlimited connectivity do not align with the realities of network operations and infrastructure costs.

According to Karl Toriola, mobile networks operate under significant technical and financial constraints that make unrestricted data consumption difficult to sustain at low prices. Telecom operators must invest heavily in network infrastructure, fibre connectivity, spectrum licences, power supply, cybersecurity, and maintenance to meet rising demand for internet services.
He argued that when operators advertise unlimited packages, those plans frequently include fair usage limits, speed throttling after certain thresholds, or premium pricing models designed to prevent excessive congestion on the network. As a result, what many consumers perceive as unlimited data often differs from truly unrestricted access.

Karl Toriola also pointed to the rapid increase in internet usage driven by video streaming, remote work, online gaming, artificial intelligence applications, and cloud-based services. These developments have significantly increased pressure on network capacity across many countries.
Industry analysts note that while some markets offer unlimited plans, they often come with restrictions, traffic management policies, or considerably higher monthly subscription fees. Telecom companies generally seek to balance customer demand with the need to maintain network performance for millions of users simultaneously.
