Fayose Calls Peter Obi ‘Fantastic Man’ — Then Gives His 2027 Ambition a Political Funeral

Fayose Calls Peter Obi ‘Fantastic Man’ — Then Gives His 2027 Ambition a Political Funeral

Former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has delivered what may be one of the more complicated political compliments ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election: Peter Obi, he says, is a “fantastic” Nigerian — but there is supposedly “no hope” for him after choosing the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) while former Vice President Atiku Abubakar remained with the African Democratic Congress (ADC). In the satirical version of the political diagnosis, Obi has apparently received a five-star character reference attached to a zero-star electoral prognosis.

Fayose’s comments come as Nigeria’s opposition landscape continues to resemble a political family meeting where everybody agrees that unity is important, just not necessarily under the same roof. Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso moved from the ADC to the NDC in May 2026, after disputes and uncertainty surrounding the opposition coalition. Obi subsequently emerged as the NDC’s presidential candidate, while Atiku remained associated with the ADC.

Obi:The ‘Fantastic’ Candidate and the Missing Hope

According to Fayose, Obi’s political qualities are not the problem. The problem, apparently, is mathematics — the kind involving opposition votes, political alliances and the Nigerian tradition of several ambitious politicians discovering, shortly before an election, that everyone else should be the one to step aside.

Fayose argued that the separation between Obi and Atiku weakened the opposition, warning that the failure to unite could once again benefit the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). His argument echoes a wider concern among political observers that opposition fragmentation could make it harder to mount a single formidable challenge to President Bola Tinubu in 2027. Recent reporting has documented the fractures surrounding the ADC and the emergence of the NDC as an alternative platform for Obi and Kwankwaso.

Opposition Unity Becomes the Political Holy Grail

The irony is difficult to miss: Nigerian politicians continue to preach opposition unity while simultaneously demonstrating an impressive ability to occupy different political houses. Obi’s move to the NDC followed internal disagreements and legal uncertainty surrounding the ADC, while Atiku remained with the coalition platform. The result has been another chapter in Nigeria’s increasingly crowded 2027 political calculations.

Fayose’s position therefore amounts to a curious political paradox: Obi may be fantastic, his supporters may be enthusiastic and the NDC may have secured his candidacy, but the former governor believes the opposition’s divided structure could prevent that popularity from becoming victory. Meanwhile, the NDC has indicated that it remains open to coalition discussions, suggesting that the political door Fayose appears to have slammed shut may still have several hinges left.

For now, Fayose has supplied the headline, Obi has the NDC ticket, Atiku has the ADC platform, and Nigeria’s opposition continues its search for the elusive formula that can turn individual political strength into collective electoral power. Whether Fayose’s “no hope” verdict becomes political prophecy or merely another memorable prediction before the 2027 campaign reaches full speed is a story OGM News NG will continue to watch closely for future developments
