Flood Tragedy During Morning School Run
According to Maikasuwa, who reportedly serves as Special Assistant to the Gwagwalada Area Council chairman on Domestic Affairs, he picked Alhassan Jamil from their Old Kutunku residence to take am go Ihyau El-Burhan Academy, Phase 3, Gwagwalada. Reports at the time also said some residents living close to the riverbank claimed they saw what appeared to be the teenager floating with his school bag still strapped to his back. However, the family was still awaiting recovery and confirmation as search efforts continued. The National Emergency Management Agency had also warned earlier in 2026 about flash-flood risks affecting the FCT, explaining that persistent rainfall and saturated soil could increase rapid surface runoff, especially in low-lying places and areas with poor drainage. Alhassan Jamil’s case therefore adds fresh urgency to repeated warnings that people should avoid attempting to cross dangerous flooded roads, culverts and waterways when water levels and currents become unsafe.
Gwagwalada itself don experience serious flooding incidents in previous years, including deadly floods that swept people away and damaged homes and property.
