Bala Mohammed Quits PDP, Joins APM in Dramatic Bauchi Shake-Up

Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) in a political development that could significantly reshape Nigeria’s opposition landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections. The governor announced the decision on Saturday during a high-profile gathering at the Government House in Bauchi, attended by party leaders, government officials, and political loyalists.

Governor Bala Mohammed, once regarded as one of the PDP’s most influential figures, said the decision followed wide consultations with associates and stakeholders. He described the move as strategic and necessary to secure a stronger political future for his supporters and the people of Bauchi State.

Strategic Exit Signals Fresh Political Direction

Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Bala Mohammed said the move to the APM was driven by the urgent need to create a more effective political structure ahead of the next election cycle. According to him, leadership requires not only vision but also the ability to provide direction and a credible platform for supporters.

Govenor Bala Muhammed stated that after reviewing the current political situation, remaining within the PDP no longer offered the cohesion required to pursue his long-term objectives. The governor stressed that the welfare of his supporters and the future of Bauchi politics were central to the decision.

Political observers say the defection may trigger further alignments across northern Nigeria, particularly if other influential politicians decide to follow the governor into the APM or explore new political alliances.

PDP Suffers Loss of Influential National Figure

Mohammed’s departure is widely seen as a serious setback for the PDP, especially given his previous role as Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum. In that capacity, he was considered one of the party’s strongest voices and a key figure in national strategy discussions.

His exit may deepen existing concerns within the PDP over internal unity, leadership direction, and preparations for the 2027 elections. Analysts believe the party may now face increased pressure to rebuild confidence among members and prevent additional defections.

Although leaving the party, Mohammed expressed gratitude to the PDP, noting that it gave him the platform through which he became governor in 2019 and contributed to governance in Bauchi State.

Formal Welcome to APM After Closed-Door Talks

The Governor Bala Muhammed was officially received into the APM by National Chairman Yusuf Dantalle, who presented him with the party’s membership card, flag, and logo during the event. The ceremony marked the culmination of days of consultations and an earlier closed-door stakeholders’ meeting where the final decision was reportedly reached.

The public nature of the defection ceremony suggests that both Mohammed and the APM intend to project strength and readiness for future political contests. The development may also enhance the profile of the APM nationally as it seeks to expand beyond its traditional base.

With 2027 approaching, the governor Bala Muhammed’s move is expected to intensify political calculations across party lines and raise fresh questions about future alliances, especially in northern Nigeria.
