Awka Flood don turn Tuesday morning journey to school into serious emergency after heavy rainfall caused flash flooding around the Nibo–Isiagu Road in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State. One school pupil reportedly went missing after the flood trapped vehicles carrying schoolchildren, while rescue teams scrambled to save those wey remain inside the dangerous water.
The missing pupil has been identified in reports as Success Ezenwafor, a pupil of UNIZIK Primary School, Awka Flood. Reports say he was travelling with other children when the flood overwhelmed the area. Videos from the scene showed a school bus stranded inside floodwater, while some children were seen trying to climb to safety. The search for Success was still ongoing as of the latest reports.
Awka Flood Traps Schoolchildren on Their Way to School
The Anambra State Government said the emergency started after several hours of heavy rainfall across Awka caused flash floods in different parts of the state capital. A concerned resident raised the alarm after recording the trapped schoolchildren and calling for urgent intervention. The Anambra State Fire Service, SEMA and NEMA Enugu Operations Office subsequently mobilised to the scene.
The first official account from the state government said six children and the shuttle driver were rescued and taken to hospital for medical attention and observation. A later statement from the Anambra State Police Command gave a slightly different figure, saying its Safe School Operatives, working with community members, rescued seven schoolchildren and two adults and moved them to safety. The difference appears to reflect separate updates during the developing rescue operation.
Search Continues as One Pupil Remains Missing
According to the police, one child involved in the incident remained unaccounted for, prompting sustained search-and-rescue operations. The Commissioner of Police, Nnanna Oji Ama, directed that the operation should continue and expand, while residents around the affected route were asked to provide information that could help responders locate the missing child.
The wider Awka Flood situation has also disrupted movement across parts of the city. The Anambra State Government reported that a one-storey residential building collapsed at Aguoye Village following the heavy rainfall, showing that the impact of the downpour went beyond the school-bus incident. The state has advised residents in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant and avoid driving or walking through moving floodwater.
The incident also comes against a wider flood warning for Anambra. NEMA had earlier advised residents, particularly those in riverine and flood-prone communities, to remain alert and be prepared to move to safer, higher ground as water levels rise. Recent reporting on the state emergency response also identified several Anambra local government areas as vulnerable to riverine flooding.
For now, the biggest concern remains the safe return of the missing pupil. While several children and adults have been rescued, the situation is a reminder that moving floodwater can become dangerous very quickly, especially on roads where drivers may underestimate its depth or force.
