Adelabu Meets Oyo APC Executives, Rejects Consensus Candidate Plot Ahead of 2027 Governorship Race

Former Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has formally declared his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in Oyo State, firmly rejecting moves by some party leaders to impose a consensus candidate. Speaking during a meeting with the state executive council of the All Progressives Congress in Ibadan, Adelabu emphasised the importance of due process and party unity as the political contest begins to take shape.

Adelabu Declares Ambition, Insists on Due Process

At the APC secretariat in Oke-Ado, Ibadan, Adelabu formally notified party leaders of his governorship ambition, describing his visit as a demonstration of loyalty and respect for party structures. He expressed confidence in securing the party’s ticket through a transparent and inclusive process, reiterating that no aspirant should be imposed on members without consultation.

The former minister strongly criticised attempts to promote a consensus candidate, warning that such moves could undermine internal democracy. Without naming individuals directly, he made it clear that any arrangement lacking the involvement of party executives, aspirants, and stakeholders would be considered invalid. According to him, fairness and adherence to party rules must guide the selection process ahead of the 2027 elections.

Adelabu also reassured party members of his commitment to unity, urging leaders and stakeholders across factions to work together. He stressed that his ambition is not only personal but aimed at strengthening the party’s chances of reclaiming power in Oyo State.

Resignation Signals Full Focus on Governorship Bid

Adelabu’s declaration follows his recent resignation as Minister of Power under President Bola Tinubu, a move he said was necessary to fully concentrate on his political aspirations. In his resignation letter, he expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and highlighted his contributions to reforms in Nigeria’s power sector.

He noted that stepping down would allow for a smooth transition while giving him the freedom to engage more actively in political consultations and grassroots mobilisation. The decision underscores the seriousness of his ambition and signals the beginning of a more intense political campaign in Oyo State.

Supporters of Adelabu have also pushed back against the endorsement of Sharafadeen Alli by some APC leaders, describing it as unauthorised. They warned that such actions risk creating divisions within the party at a critical time.

Party Leadership Responds, Calls for Unity

In response, Oyo State APC Chairman Moses Adeyemo commended Adelabu’s consultative approach, describing him as a committed party member with the capacity to lead. He emphasised the need for unity within the party, particularly as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.

Other party executives present at the meeting, including Deputy Chairman Taofek Lamidi and Secretary Fatai Adenine, echoed the importance of maintaining internal cohesion. They noted that open engagement among aspirants and stakeholders would strengthen the party’s chances in the forthcoming election.

Adelabu, for his part, outlined his vision for governance, promising an inclusive administration focused on economic growth and wealth creation. He assured party leaders that no region of Oyo State would be marginalised under his leadership, pledging to prioritise collective progress if elected governor.

As political activities gradually intensify ahead of the 2027 governorship election, Adelabu’s firm stance against a consensus arrangement signals a potential contest within the APC in Oyo State. With multiple interests already emerging, the party faces the challenge of balancing internal competition with unity to remain competitive in the race.
