Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has declared that the All Progressives Congress (APC) will defeat opposition parties in the Federal Capital Territory during the 2027 presidential election, insisting that no other party will win the territory for the presidency.
Nyesom Wike made the declaration on Wednesday while speaking with journalists in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where he also described himself as the “General Commander of the Political Infantry” in Rivers State and the FCT.
The former Rivers State governor said he remained politically active in both territories and was determined to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid. “No party will win the presidential election in the FCT except the APC,” Wike declared.
His confidence represents a significant political challenge to opposition parties, particularly because the FCT produced a surprise result in the 2023 presidential election, when Peter Obi of the Labour Party defeated both Tinubu and Atiku Abubakar in the territory.
Wike Points to FCT Projects and Rising Revenue
Nyesom Wike linked his confidence in the APC’s prospects to what he described as his administration’s achievements in Abuja since he became FCT minister.
According to the minister, the FCT was generating approximately ₦6 billion to ₦7 billion monthly when he assumed office, but he said increased revenue collection had pushed the figure to between ₦35 billion and ₦40 billion monthly.
Wike said the additional revenue was being directed toward priority infrastructure and development projects across the capital. He argued that the improvement demonstrated that governance could produce tangible results when leaders were prepared to work.
The minister also pointed to his record as governor of Rivers State, where he said his administration completed 12 flyovers. He argued that his experience in Rivers prepared him for the task of transforming the FCT and that his results should be judged by the projects delivered rather than by political criticism.
“I came to FCT to prove a point that there’s nothing difficult if you want to work,” Nyesom Wike said, insisting that his administration had “changed the narrative.”
‘General Commander’ Nyesom Wike Takes Charge of 2027 Battle
Nyesom Wike’s comments went beyond defending his performance as FCT minister. He openly positioned himself as a key political operator in the coming presidential election.
“I am the General Commander of the Political Infantry; therefore, I am in charge. So also in FCT,” Wike said, arguing that a politician does not have to occupy the office of governor to retain significant political influence.
He also made it clear that his political activities are now heavily focused on ensuring Tinubu’s victory. Wike questioned whether he was expected to remain passive while opposition figures such as Atiku Abubakar mobilise for 2027.
The declaration is particularly notable because Wike was previously a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and played a major role in the party’s internal politics. His subsequent alliance with Tinubu and appointment as FCT minister has placed him at the centre of a complicated political realignment ahead of the 2027 election.
Wike has also rejected suggestions that the opposition could easily defeat Tinubu, maintaining that the political circumstances of 2027 will be different from those of 2023.
FCT Battle Could Produce Another Political Shock
Despite Wike’s confidence, the FCT remains an unpredictable political territory. In the 2023 presidential election, Peter Obi won the FCT with 281,717 votes, while Tinubu polled 90,902 and Atiku Abubakar recorded 74,199 votes.
That previous result means Wike’s prediction that the APC will completely dominate the FCT in 2027 is likely to attract considerable scrutiny from opposition parties and political observers.
Wike, however, appears undeterred. He believes the infrastructure projects and other developments under his administration will influence voters and strengthen support for Tinubu.
With the 2027 presidential election approaching, the FCT is shaping up to be an important political battleground. Wike has now made his position unmistakably clear: he intends to use his political influence and record in Abuja to help deliver the territory to Tinubu and the APC.
