Kano State’s Multi-Agency Task Force on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking has announced an ambitious plan to take more than 10,000 youths off the streets for Rehabilitation center, skills acquisition and reintegration into society — a target large enough to make even Kano’s calculators request a short break. The task force chairman, Muhuyi Rimin Gado, disclosed the plan on Tuesday, saying the strategy is designed to go beyond arrests by helping people affected by substance abuse recover and become productive members of society.
Rehabilitation center To Receive 10,000 Drug Users In Kano
The latest announcement builds on a programme unveiled earlier in the year, when the Kano State Government said it wanted to rehabilitate 10,000 drug users within one year. The proposed approach includes detoxification, rehabilitation, vocational training and economic empowerment, with trades such as tailoring, shoemaking and garment production mentioned as possible avenues for skills development.
And now the numbers are beginning to tell their own story. The task force says about 125 people have already been referred to the Kano Reformatory Institute, Kiru, for rehabilitation, while the agency has also reported more than 380 arrests and over 230 convictions since its inauguration in July. In newsroom arithmetic, that means the authorities are simultaneously counting arrests, convictions, rehabilitation cases and a 10,000-person target — apparently proving that Kano’s anti-drug spreadsheet is working overtime.
When Rehabilitation center Centre Needs an Expansion
The task force says demand for rehabilitation has increased, with families voluntarily bringing relatives forward for treatment and reintegration. The existing Kano State Reformatory Institute in Kiru has reportedly reached capacity, prompting Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to provide an additional facility in Tofa Local Government Area to serve as an extension.
The development highlights one of the biggest challenges facing the initiative: getting people through rehabilitation is only part of the job. The task force says it is engaging industrial stakeholders over employment, skills acquisition and productive opportunities for those who complete rehabilitation. In other words, the plan is not supposed to end with someone leaving a rehabilitation centre and immediately asking the street, “So, what do we do now?”
Kano established the multi-agency task force in June and inaugurated it in July as a coordinated response involving enforcement, intelligence gathering, public enlightenment, Rehabilitation center and cooperation with security and other relevant agencies. The state has also said the wider campaign is intended to address the relationship between substance abuse, unemployment and violent crime.
As Kano pushes toward the 10,000-person target, the real test will be whether rehabilitation, skills training and reintegration can produce lasting results alongside enforcement. For now, the task force has set a sizeable goal, expanded its rehabilitation capacity and called for public cooperation.
