Omo-Agege Quits APC After Crushing Defeat, Says He Refuses to Become “Political Sitting Duck”

The Omo-Agege political drama took another dramatic turn after former Deputy President of the Senate, Ovie Omo-Agege, formally resigned from the All Progressives Congress following his devastating defeat in the Delta Central senatorial primary election. The resignation has sparked intense debate across Delta State and beyond, with many observers questioning whether the ruling party is quietly battling internal fractures that could widen before future elections. Omo-Agege’s explosive statement that he would not remain a “sitting duck” inside the APC immediately added tension and suspense to an already controversial political development.

Delta APC Accused of Humiliating Omo-Agege With Landslide Defeat

Omo-Agege announced his resignation in a letter dated May 22, 2026, addressed to the APC chairman of Orogun Ward 2 in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State. According to his media adviser, Sunday Areh, the former senator reached the decision after consultations with political associates and supporters as well as recent developments within the APC structure in Delta State.

The Omo-Agege resignation followed a crushing defeat during the APC direct primary election for the Delta Central Senatorial District. Incumbent Senator Ede Dafinone secured a staggering 116,252 votes under the Option A4 voting system, while Omo-Agege polled only 3,643 votes across the eight local government areas in the district. The outcome shocked many political watchers due to the enormous margin between both candidates. Party officials later declared Dafinone winner after confirming that the exercise complied with APC electoral guidelines.

Omo-Agege’s Exit Sparks Panic Over APC Cracks in Delta State

Political analysts say the Omo-Agege exit reflects growing tension inside several political parties ahead of future electoral contests in Nigeria. In recent years, internal party disputes, controversial primaries, and allegations of power struggles have repeatedly forced major politicians to abandon long-standing political platforms after failing to secure tickets or maintain influence within party structures.

Although Omo-Agege thanked the APC for giving him the opportunity to serve as Deputy President of the 9th Senate, his “sitting duck” remark has continued to attract attention because it suggests frustration beyond the election defeat itself. Some political observers believe the statement points toward dissatisfaction with internal alignments and shifting loyalties inside Delta APC. Others argue that the overwhelming primary result may indicate a wider political transition within Delta Central, where new alliances and grassroots calculations appear to be reshaping the balance of power.

The Omo-Ageg development is already fueling speculation about possible political realignments in Delta State, especially as parties prepare for future electoral battles. While the former senator insists he remains committed to the development of Delta Central and Nigeria, many political stakeholders are now waiting to see whether his resignation marks the end of a political chapter or the beginning of a fresh political movement capable of disrupting existing power structures in the state.
