The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has publicly mocked the All Progressives Congress (APC) following a high-profile meeting between the ruling party’s leadership and Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, amid growing speculation about his possible defection.
In a sharply worded reaction, the ADC described the APC’s move as a sign of political desperation, suggesting that the ruling party is making urgent efforts to retain a key opposition figure whose departure could alter the balance of power.
ADC Criticises APC’s “Desperate” Move
The ADC, through its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, took to social media to express its position on the development. Abdullahi characterised the APC’s outreach to Governor Mohammed as an indication of the party’s concern over a potential defection.
According to him, the speed and scale of the APC’s response—reportedly involving senior party leaders and governors—highlight the perceived political weight of the Bauchi governor. He argued that such a move reflects the ruling party’s urgency in preventing a shift that could influence Nigeria’s political dynamics.
Abdullahi further suggested that the situation underscores the growing relevance of the ADC in national politics. He maintained that the possibility of a single high-profile defection has exposed vulnerabilities within the APC, reinforcing the opposition party’s belief in its rising influence.
Closed-Door Meeting Fuels Speculation
Earlier, APC leaders held a closed-door meeting with Governor Mohammed at the Government House in Bauchi. The delegation reportedly included the party’s National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, alongside prominent figures such as Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf.
Despite the significance of the meeting, both Mohammed and Yilwatda declined to disclose details of the discussions, leaving observers to speculate on its outcome. Political analysts suggest that the engagement may have been aimed at persuading the governor to either remain within his current political alignment or reconsider any planned move.
The lack of official communication following the meeting has further intensified public interest, with many interpreting the silence as a sign of ongoing negotiations behind the scenes.
Defection Signals and Political Implications
Governor Mohammed, who currently serves as chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum, has recently indicated that he is weighing his political future. His remarks have pointed to the ADC as a possible destination, although he has emphasised that consultations are still ongoing.
Observers note that any decision by Mohammed to defect could have far-reaching implications, particularly within the PDP, where he occupies a strategic leadership role. A shift to another party may trigger broader realignments and influence alliances ahead of future elections.
For the ADC, the prospect of welcoming a sitting governor of Mohammed’s stature is seen as a potential boost to its national profile. Conversely, for the APC, retaining or attracting influential figures remains a critical component of its broader political strategy.
