U.S. Troops Expand Military Training Programme With Nigerian Forces in Bauchi. Nigeria’s security cooperation with the United States has taken another step forward in Bauchi, where American and Nigerian forces have been conducting military training covering unmanned aircraft systems, combat casualty care, weapons familiarisation, camouflage, water treatment, explosive ordnance disposal and small-unit tactics. According to the latest United States Africa Command update published on August 24, 2026, the activities are part of a wider effort to strengthen readiness, Troops military capability and long-term partnership between both countries.
The development is serious business for the soldiers involved, although the modern battlefield appears to be sending Nigeria a rather complicated message: these days, a soldier may need to understand medicine, drones, tactics, water treatment and explosives before breakfast. At least nobody can accuse the training programme of being short of variety.
U.S. Troops Military Training in Bauchi Raises Fresh Questions About Nigeria’s Security Strategy
The Bauchi training included Combat Lifesaver and Tactical Combat Casualty Care instruction, alongside weapons familiarisation, camouflage, water treatment and testing, explosive ordnance disposal, small-unit tactics and unmanned aircraft systems. AFRICOM said the training opportunities are developed around available U.S. expertise and areas Nigerian personnel identify as useful, rather than being restricted to one fixed curriculum.
The unmanned aircraft training appears to have attracted particular attention. AFRICOM reported that approximately 10 Nigerian Air Force Special Forces Regiment personnel participated in UAS instruction led by U.S. Army Sgt. Mark Murphy. After an initial classroom session, the participants moved into practical training and learned how to operate the aircraft. The report said the Nigerian personnel were enthusiastic about receiving hands-on experience and continuing the training in the future.
Nigerian Soldiers Enter Bauchi “University” as U.S. Troops Forces Bring Drones and Battlefield Lessons
Beyond the technical lessons, the programme is also designed to strengthen relationships between Nigerian and American personnel. U.S. officials said the combined activities, intelligence sharing and professional exchanges are intended to improve interoperability and help both sides address shared security challenges. Apparently, international military cooperation now comes with homework, practical examinations and, when operations allow, basketball and volleyball.
The wider relationship has continued to develop in 2026. Nigeria and the United States have also been working through a bilateral security framework involving defence cooperation, intelligence sharing, counterterrorism efforts and other security priorities. Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Ministry said a USA-Nigeria Joint Working Group met in Washington in August to review progress and discuss the next phase of security collaboration.
The United States, under current President Donald J. Trump, continues to maintain security cooperation with Nigeria, while the Bauchi activities demonstrate how that partnership is increasingly focused on practical skills and battlefield readiness. For Nigeria, the bigger question is whether the knowledge gained during training can translate into stronger operational capability and improved security outcomes on the ground. OGM News NG will continue watching the development, because if Bauchi is becoming a classroom for modern warfare, Nigerians will certainly want to know what comes after the final examination.
