ADC Constitution Review Targets Women, Youth Inclusion

ADC Constitution Review Targets Women, Youth Inclusion

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has taken a significant step toward internal reform, with a renewed focus on inclusivity, technological advancement, and institutional discipline. On Tuesday, the party formally received the report of its Constitution Review Committee, signaling a new phase in its efforts to reposition itself within Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.

Representing the National Chairman, David Mark, the party’s National Legal Adviser, Oserheimen Osunbor, accepted the report at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja. The review, led by Etigwe Uwa, is designed to align the ADC party’s constitution with global best practices while strengthening internal democracy and promoting broader participation among members.

ADC Push for Inclusion and Democratic Reforms

Central to the committee’s recommendations is a deliberate effort to enhance representation among women, youths, and persons living with disabilities. The proposed constitutional amendments include a minimum of 30 per cent representation for women and 20 per cent for young people in ADC party structures, marking a clear shift toward inclusivity.

The reforms also emphasise strengthening internal democracy by improving transparency, accountability, and dispute resolution mechanisms. According to ADC party leadership, the constitution serves as the foundation of the party’s identity and must reflect both the aspirations of its members and the broader expectations of Nigerians seeking credible political alternatives.

The inclusive nature of the review process, which involved consultations across states and geopolitical zones, was highlighted as a key strength. ADC Party officials noted that this approach reinforces a sense of ownership among members and aligns with the ADC’s goal of building a participatory and people-oriented political structure.

Technology and Structural Modernisation

The committee introduced several forward-looking proposals aimed at modernising the party’s operations in line with Nigeria’s ongoing digital transformation. Among these is the introduction of digital membership registration and the establishment of the Office of the National Technology Secretary to oversee technological strategy.

These changes reflect the growing importance of data-driven political engagement, including electronic voter registers, digital communication tools, and emerging trends such as electronic voting and results transmission. The committee noted that political parties that fail to embrace technology risk falling behind in an increasingly competitive environment.

In addition, provisions for virtual and hybrid meetings were recommended to improve efficiency and reduce logistical challenges associated with physical gatherings. This is expected to enhance participation among members spread across the country and in the diaspora.

Strengthening Discipline and Internal Cohesion

To address internal conflicts and promote unity, the committee proposed a restructured disciplinary framework. New State Disciplinary and Reconciliation Committees are to replace existing ward- and local government-level mechanisms, with a focus on both adjudication and conflict resolution.

Appeals from these committees will be handled at the national level, ensuring a more streamlined and transparent process. The introduction of a robust arbitration system is also expected to reduce internal litigation and minimise defections arising from unresolved disputes.

ADC Party leaders stressed that while constitutional reforms are essential, the success of any political organisation ultimately depends on the discipline, loyalty, and commitment of its members. The ADC leadership urged members to prioritise collective goals over personal interests in order to build a stronger and more unified party.

The ADC’s constitution review represents a comprehensive attempt to reposition the party as a credible and forward-looking political platform in Nigeria. By prioritising inclusivity, embracing technological innovation, and strengthening internal governance, the party aims to meet the expectations of Nigerians seeking principled and effective leadership.
