Enugu PDP Inaugurates Caretaker Committee as Party Moves to Regain Political Ground Before 2027

ENUGU, NIGERIA – The factional National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by Acting National Chairman Abdulraham Mohameed and National Secretary Sam Anyanwu, on Sunday inaugurated a new caretaker committee for Enugu State, signalling a fresh bid to reclaim political dominance ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The event, which took place in Enugu, drew party faithful from all 17 local government areas of the state and appeared to rekindle enthusiasm after months of internal stagnation and uncertainty. Former Chairman of Igboeze South Local Government Area, Vitus Okechi, was sworn in as Chairman of the caretaker committee, while Chukwunonye Okereke assumed office as State Secretary.

Okechi, in his inaugural address, stressed unity, loyalty, and a return to the PDP’s historic influence in Enugu politics, underscoring the caretaker committee’s mandate to reposition the party ahead of future electoral contests.

New Caretaker Leadership and Mandate

The inauguration of the caretaker committee marks a significant step by the Abdulraham Mohameed–led faction of the PDP to restore structure and coherence within the party’s Enugu chapter. With internal wrangling and leadership disputes having slowed party activities in recent months, the new committee is seen as a temporary stabilising body tasked with rebuilding trust among members.

Chairman Vitus Okechi, whose political background includes serving as Chairman of Igboeze South Local Government, brings experience in grassroots mobilisation. His emergence is viewed by some party stakeholders as a strategic move to reconnect the party with its base, particularly in rural communities where the PDP once enjoyed overwhelming support.

Chukwunonye Okereke, as State Secretary, is expected to coordinate organisational matters, documentation, and communication within the party structure. Together, Okechi and Okereke are charged with harmonising interests, managing membership issues, and preparing the platform for a smooth transition to a substantive state executive in due course.

Push to Reclaim Enugu and Reignite PDP Structures

Sunday’s ceremony, which attracted party members from the 17 local government areas, was also a show of strength and a signal that the PDP is not prepared to concede political space in Enugu ahead of the 2027 polls. Party faithful used the opportunity to restate their commitment to rebuilding ward and local government structures and reactivating dormant organs of the party.

Speakers at the inauguration, including local leaders and representatives from various constituencies, reportedly framed the new caretaker committee as a “rescue team” for Enugu PDP. They highlighted the need to reconcile aggrieved members, mend fractured alliances, and modernise internal processes to appeal to a broader segment of the electorate, especially youth and first-time voters.

The renewed push is also interpreted as part of a broader national strategy by the factional NWC to strengthen its presence in states where the PDP previously held sway. Enugu, historically considered a stronghold for the party, remains a key battleground where the restoration of internal cohesion could translate into substantial electoral gains.

Calls for Unity, Loyalty, and Discipline

In his remarks, caretaker chairman Vitus Okechi underscored the themes of unity and loyalty as central to the committee’s mission. He urged members to prioritise party interest over personal ambitions and to resolve disputes internally through dialogue and established mechanisms, rather than public confrontation.

Okechi also appealed to party stakeholders, including former office holders, youth groups, and women’s wings, to support the caretaker team in reenergising the PDP’s structures across Enugu State. He emphasised that a united front was essential for the party to reclaim its dominant status and present itself as a credible alternative to voters in 2027.

The new leadership further pledged transparency in its operations, promising to run an inclusive process that will allow all factions and tendencies within the party to participate in decision-making. This, they argued, would ensure that the eventual emergence of a substantive state executive reflects the will of the majority and reduces the risk of renewed internal conflict.

Looking Ahead to 2027: Rebuilding, Rebranding, and Representation

With the 2027 general elections still ahead but already shaping political calculations, the inauguration of the caretaker committee is seen as a starting point rather than an end in itself. The committee will be expected to embark on membership drives, capacity-building for local organisers, and issue-based political messaging capable of resonating with the electorate.

Analysts believe that to truly regain its foothold, the PDP in Enugu will need to balance internal reconciliation with external outreach, offering clear policy positions on governance, development, and representation. The party’s ability to rebrand and differentiate itself from rivals may play a decisive role in how voters respond when electioneering activities formally commence.

For now, the successful inauguration of the caretaker committee has injected new energy into the Enugu PDP, but the real test lies in how effectively the new leadership can translate that enthusiasm into sustainable structures, electoral readiness, and a united front ahead of 2027.
