Minister Idi Mukhtar Maiha has dismissed widespread reports suggesting that the Federal Government has imposed a nationwide ban on open grazing across Nigeria, stating that such claims are inaccurate and misleading. Minister Idi Mukhtar Maiha revealed that Nigeria currently has 273 legally gazetted grazing reserves, covering more than 4.5 million hectares of land across different regions. Minister Mukhtar Maiha said these reserves form the backbone of the national livestock development agenda aimed at reducing pressure on farmlands and creating dedicated spaces for pastoral activities.
Minister Mukhtar Maiha noted that the Federal Government is collaborating closely with state authorities to rehabilitate and upgrade these reserves. Minister Mukhtar Maiha said ongoing improvements include the installation of water facilities, veterinary services, fodder banks, and better access roads to ensure that the reserves become functional and attractive for pastoralists.
Minister Mukhtar Maiha added that these upgrades are central to preventing farmer–herder clashes and establishing a modern livestock system that enhances productivity. Minister Mukhtar Maiha stressed that ranching remains the long-term objective, but only a gradual approach can ensure sustainable transformation without marginalizing pastoral communities.
