Minister of Information Mohammed Idris has emphasized the urgent need for deeper collaboration among D-8 member countries to strengthen their media ecosystems and confront the growing threat of misinformation. Speaking at the D-8 Media Forum in Baku, Azerbaijan, the Minister of Information underscored that unity in communication strategies is essential in today’s rapidly evolving digital environment.
Mohammed Idris noted that the dominance of social platforms and the speed of online content circulation have empowered false narratives to spread faster than ever. He explained that without coordinated efforts, developing nations remain vulnerable to information distortions that can destabilize institutions and weaken regional trust.
Mohammed Idris reiterated that the D-8 bloc—which comprises Nigeria, Egypt, Turkey, Pakistan, Iran, Bangladesh, Malaysia, and Indonesia—must prioritize information security as a collective responsibility. He stressed that shared goals and unified messaging can greatly enhance the group’s global visibility and resilience.
Mohammed Idris Highlights Misinformation as a Threat to Regional Stability
Mohammed Idris described misinformation as one of the most pressing challenges confronting modern societies, noting that it poses a direct threat to stability, democratic governance, and social cohesion. He warned that harmful narratives, when left unchecked, can erode public confidence in institutions and cause long-lasting political and economic damage.
Mohammed Idris pointed out that technological advancements, including artificial intelligence and content-automation tools, have made it easier for malicious actors to manipulate information at scale. He argued that this reality demands smarter surveillance frameworks, cross-border intelligence sharing, and enhanced digital literacy programs across D-8 nations.
Mohammed Idris further emphasized that combating misinformation requires not only government action but also strong partnerships with the media, civil society, academic institutions, and global communication networks. He encouraged member states to champion transparency, fact-based journalism, and ethical media practices.
Mohammed Idris Reaffirms Nigeria’s Commitment to Strengthening D-8 Media Capacity
Mohammed Idris assured delegates that Nigeria remains fully committed to supporting initiatives that advance media professionalism and strengthen collective information resilience within the D-8 community. He highlighted Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to modernize its own media infrastructure and promote responsible digital communication.
Idris encouraged member states to explore joint training programs, multimedia exchanges, and shared technological investments that enhance capacity across national media institutions. He said such collaboration will help equip journalists with the tools needed to navigate the complexities of the global information environment.
Idris concluded by calling for a renewed sense of unity among D-8 nations. He expressed confidence that with consistent partnership, shared values, and collective innovation, the bloc can build a stronger, more credible regional media system capable of countering misinformation and amplifying the true voice of member countries on the world stage.
