The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State on Saturday elected Adamu Bawa as its new state chairman during the party’s congress held in Ilorin. Adamu Bawa, who previously contested for the Kwara North Senatorial District in the 2023 general elections, emerged unopposed, reflecting what party leaders described as unity and consensus within the PDP ranks.
Other officials elected included AbdulRahman Kayode as State Secretary and Olusegun Adewara as Publicity Secretary, alongside several others. The congress was conducted under the supervision of officials from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
In his address, former Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, commended members for demonstrating maturity, fairness, and internal democracy. “The PDP has once again shown that it is the party that provides a level playing field and prioritises the will of the people,” Saraki said, contrasting the party’s peaceful exercise with what he described as disorderly practices in rival parties.
Saraki, Mohammed Emphasize Unity and Readiness
The immediate past chairman of the party, Babatunde Mohammed, praised members for ensuring a seamless transition. He maintained that the PDP in Kwara is “firmly on the ground and fully prepared” to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.
“As far as the Kwara PDP is concerned, we are one big family, well prepared for the task ahead. With the support of the people, we are firmly on the ground and ready to challenge the APC as the main opposition party in 2027,” Mohammed said.
Saraki also noted that the peaceful nature of the congress underscored the PDP’s claim of being a party that upholds democratic values. He said the maturity displayed in Kwara State was reflective of the party’s national character and its commitment to setting standards in political conduct.
Adamu Bawa Pledges to Reposition PDP Ahead of 2027
In his acceptance speech, the newly elected chairman, Adamu Bawa, pledged to unite party executives and stakeholders towards revitalising the PDP’s fortunes in the state. He assured members that his leadership would be focused on strengthening structures, promoting inclusivity, and building momentum for the next general elections.
“We are committed to the development of the party both at the state and national levels. We will work together with stakeholders to regain power in Kwara State in 2027,” Bawa stated.
Party leaders and members expressed optimism that the new leadership would consolidate the PDP’s position as the main opposition in Kwara, while also rebuilding its support base ahead of future contests.
