Labour Party chieftain Abayomi Arabambi has dragged the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) and its Vice-Chancellor before the Federal High Court in Abuja over what he described as the university’s failure to release academic records relating to former Anambra State governor and NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi.
The suit, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/2144/2026, was filed on September 9, 2026, by Arabambi’s lawyer, Anderson Asemota. Arabambi is asking the court for an order of mandamus compelling UNN to respond to his request under the Freedom of Information Act 2011.
Abayomi Arabambi Seeks Obi’s 1984 Certificate and Academic Records
Abayomi Arabambi said he wrote to UNN on July 16 requesting a certified true copy of certificate number D000198, which he said was issued to Gregory Peter Onwubuasi Obi for a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy in 1984.
He also requested existing academic and institutional records connected to the award of the degree, including graduation records, certificate-register entries and relevant Senate or academic approval records. According to his court documents, the request was received by the university on August 6, but he said no records or formal notice of refusal followed within the period prescribed by the FOI Act.
Abayomi Arabambi Returns to Court After Alleged UNN Silence
Abayomi Arabambi said he subsequently sent a reminder on August 31, which he said was received by UNN on September 1. He alleged that, as of the filing of the case, the university had neither supplied the requested documents nor issued a written refusal identifying the legal exemption relied upon.
The case has not yet been assigned to a judge, according to a report based on the court documents. The university’s position on Arabambi’s allegations was not included in the reports reviewed. UNN’s official records office states that it is the custodian of undergraduate academic records and handles certificate verification and certification, while noting that official verification requests are subject to its procedures.
The legal action adds another layer to the continuing political dispute surrounding Peter Obi’s educational records as Nigeria approaches the 2027 presidential election.
