The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for lifting the emergency rule imposed on Rivers State, describing the decision as a restoration of democratic governance.
President Tinubu had, on March 18, 2025, invoked his constitutional powers under Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State. The move led to the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, while Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Bias (retd.) was appointed as the state’s Sole Administrator for an initial period of six months.
On Wednesday, Tinubu announced the end of the emergency rule, citing “a groundswell of a new spirit of understanding” within the state. He declared that the suspension of democratic governance would lapse at midnight, restoring the authority of the elected officials.
Wike Commends President Tinubu Intervention
Reacting to the development, Wike praised the President’s leadership, noting that Tinubu’s intervention not only stabilized Rivers State during a period of political tension but also reaffirmed his commitment to the sustenance of democracy across the country.
In a statement issued through his aide, Lere Olayinka, the FCT Minister described Tinubu’s March decision as a timely one that “saved the State” from deeper crisis. He further stated that the latest suspension of the emergency rule has restored the confidence of Rivers people in the President’s leadership.
“The President Tinubu has once again demonstrated his total commitment to peace and the sustenance of democracy,” Wike said, adding that Rivers residents must remain steadfast in their support for Tinubu as he works to return Nigeria to “the path of progress and development.”
Wike Call for Unity and Vigilance Against Division
Wike also urged political stakeholders in Rivers State to set aside their differences and work collectively for the advancement of peace, progress, and stability. He warned against the activities of “fifth columnists” seeking to exploit the crisis for personal gain.
“From Rivers State going forward, the only news that will emanate will be of peace, progress and development,” the Minister declared. He called on residents to remain vigilant and united to safeguard the gains of restored democracy.
With Tinubu’s decision, Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy are expected to resume their duties, marking a new phase in the state’s political trajectory.
