PETROAN Addresses Misleading Petrol Pricing Claims, Highlights Hopeful Impact of Port Harcourt Refinery

The Petroleum Products Retail Outlet Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN) has responded to recent reports surrounding petrol pricing. Billy Gillis-Harry, the association’s president, clarified misleading statements attributed to its Public Relations Officer, Dr. Joseph Obele. Obele had alleged a price discrepancy, claiming petrol from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) costs N75 more per litre than the N970 price offered by the Dangote refinery. In a formal statement, Gillis-Harry refuted these claims, reaffirming that NNPCL has not introduced any changes to the existing price structure for Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).

Gillis-Harry reassured stakeholders and the general public that PETROAN members remain committed to adhering to the previous pricing framework established by NNPCL. He also stressed the importance of factual reporting, especially on sensitive issues like petrol pricing, which directly impact the Nigerian economy and consumers. The association urged members and the public to rely on verified updates from official sources regarding any adjustments in fuel pricing policies.

Port Harcourt Refinery Signals Relief Amid Fuel Price Concerns

Billy Gillis-Harry, President of PETROAN, has drawn attention to the commencement of refined petroleum production at the Port Harcourt Refinery. This milestone is poised to offer significant relief to Nigerians, particularly as they navigate the challenges of fluctuating fuel prices. Gillis-Harry clarified that despite this positive development, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has not officially announced a new price for Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) since the refinery resumed operations. This statement aims to dispel misinformation and ensure transparency regarding pricing updates.

PETROAN remains committed to fostering stability in the petroleum market while engaging relevant stakeholders on pricing adjustments. The association urged Nigerians to exercise patience, emphasizing that local refining efforts could pave the way for more affordable and stable petrol prices. As the Port Harcourt Refinery ramps up production, PETROAN members are optimistic about its potential to reduce dependency on imports and enhance price consistency in the domestic market.

PETROAN’s Commitment to Transparency

In addressing the confusion, PETROAN reiterated its commitment to providing accurate and transparent information to the public. Gillis-Harry noted that misinformation could lead to unwarranted panic and urged media outlets to verify facts before publication.

The association also assured consumers that it remains dedicated to collaborating with the NNPCL and other stakeholders to ensure equitable fuel pricing. PETROAN is optimistic that the current pricing uncertainties will soon be resolved in favor of Nigerians.

Implications of Port Harcourt Refinery Resumption

The resumption of operations at the Port Harcourt Refinery marks a pivotal moment for Nigeria’s oil and gas sector. Gillis-Harry expressed hope that local refining efforts would reduce dependency on imported fuel and stabilize market prices. He called the development a step towards achieving energy security in Nigeria.

While awaiting price announcements from NNPCL, PETROAN encouraged stakeholders to focus on the broader benefits of local refining. The association anticipates that increased domestic production will lead to more competitive pricing in the long term.

Dr. Joseph Obele’s Controversial Remarks

Dr. Joseph Obele’s earlier claim regarding a N75 price disparity sparked widespread concern. Gillis-Harry distanced PETROAN from Obele’s remarks, emphasizing that they do not reflect the association’s official position. He called for caution in spreading unverified information to avoid unnecessary tension.

Obele’s statement had created an impression of inconsistency in petrol pricing, which PETROAN promptly corrected. The association reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that accurate information reaches the public through proper channels.

Nigerians Await Pricing Updates from NNPCL

As PETROAN and its members adhere to the old pricing model, the public eagerly awaits new PMS price updates from NNPCL. The association remains optimistic that the pricing will reflect the benefits of local refining efforts and ease the burden on consumers.

Gillis-Harry concluded by urging Nigerians to trust the process, assuring that PETROAN will continue to prioritize consumer interests. He reiterated that the association is closely monitoring developments and will provide timely updates on price adjustments.
