President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Special Assistant on Social Media, Dada Olusegun, has fired back at opposition figures over renewed controversy surrounding historical United States law-enforcement records concerning the President, insisting that the allegations recycled around the 2019 and 2023 elections will not deliver victory to Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi in 2027. In the increasingly theatrical political exchange, Olusegun’s message effectively amounts to: bring the old files, bring the new files, but please remember there is still an election to win.
FBI Files Become 2027 Political Football
The latest controversy follows a sworn FBI declaration filed in a U.S. federal court in August 2026 confirming that Tinubu was a subject of an investigation connected to drug-trafficking investigations in the early 1990s. However, the filing does not itself establish that Tinubu committed a crime or was convicted. The dispute centres largely on what additional records may exist and whether they should be released.
That distinction, however, has done little to cool the Nigerian political temperature. Atiku has continued to pursue transparency over the records, while Peter Obi has also criticised efforts to restrict their release. The Presidency, meanwhile, has accused opposition politicians of dragging decades-old American records back into the spotlight as part of their 2027 campaign strategy.
Tinubu Camp Says Opposition Is Replaying an Old Script
Olusegun’s intervention comes as the opposition tries to turn the FBI controversy into another major test of Tinubu’s political credibility. The Presidency’s argument is essentially that Nigerians have already heard variations of the allegations during previous election cycles, particularly the 2023 contest, and that repeating them in 2026 will not automatically produce a different electoral result in 2027. Recent political commentary has similarly noted that the controversy surrounding Tinubu’s U.S. records has been publicly discussed for years.
The political arithmetic, however, remains far from settled. Atiku is now the African Democratic Congress presidential candidate, while Peter Obi is also positioning himself for the 2027 contest, and the opposition landscape has undergone several changes. Atiku has separately challenged Tinubu’s eligibility in court over an alleged discrepancy involving the President’s NYSC certificate, although proceedings in that case have faced delays.
For now, the battle appears to be moving simultaneously through American courtrooms, Nigerian courts and social media — three places where political arguments rarely arrive without carrying extra luggage. Whether the FBI controversy becomes a decisive electoral issue or another chapter in Nigeria’s long-running political archive will ultimately depend on what records are released, what the courts decide and, most importantly, what Nigerian voters think when they reach the ballot box.
