Veteran Nigerian singer SkyB has stirred controversy after claiming that global music star Burna Boy should support him financially because of his contributions to the development of the Port Harcourt music scene.
Speaking during a podcast appearance, SkyB said he played a major role in promoting Port Harcourt artistes during his active years and helped create opportunities for several musicians who later achieved national success.
SkyB Claims Pioneers Have Been Forgotten
According to SkyB, many artistes he supported in the past have distanced themselves after becoming famous. He specifically mentioned Burna Boy, arguing that younger stars should remember and appreciate those who helped build the industry before them.
The singer maintained that collaboration, recognition or financial support from established stars could help revive the careers of veteran entertainers who contributed to the foundation of today’s music scene.
SkyB also alleged that regional factors may influence the level of support some artistes receive within the industry.
Social Media Divided Over The Claim
The comments quickly generated debate online. Some Nigerians agreed that music pioneers deserve more recognition and support for their contributions to the growth of the entertainment industry.
Others argued that while respect and acknowledgment are important, no successful artiste is automatically obligated to provide financial assistance to colleagues simply because they came before them.
As expected, the internet no miss the chance for cruise. Some users joked that the Nigerian music industry may soon need a “Founders Association” where veteran artistes can collect appreciation awards. Others humorously asked whether success now comes with compulsory monthly support payments.
Beyond the jokes, the discussion has reignited conversations about mentorship, gratitude, legacy and the responsibilities successful entertainers may or may not owe to those who came before them.
For now, SkyB’s remarks have once again placed the spotlight on the relationship between veteran musicians and the new generation of Nigerian superstars.
