Former senator representing Zamfara Central in the 7th and 8th National Assembly, Kabir Marafa, has formally defected from the African Democratic Congress to the Nigeria Democratic Congress, describing the move as one guided by fairness, inclusion and internal democracy.
The former lawmaker announced his decision on Tuesday in Abuja during a reception hosted at the residence of Seriake Dickson. His defection is coming amid growing political realignments ahead of the next general election cycle, with observers noting that the development could affect party strength in the North-West region.
Marafa Explains Reasons for Defection
Speaking during the event, Kabir Marafa said his decision followed careful reflection on recent political developments, particularly concerns surrounding leadership arrangements and internal processes in political parties.
According to him, politics should be built on participation, recognition and equal opportunity for members. He stressed that individuals can only effectively serve the people when given the space and support to contribute meaningfully.
The former senator also stated that his decision was not motivated by personal ambition but by the desire to belong to a political platform that reflects his principles of justice, fairness and collective responsibility.
Concerns Over Representation and Party Loyalty
Kabir Marafa recalled his role in the emergence of the All Progressives Congress in Zamfara State and noted that the state played a significant part in the party’s 2015 electoral success.
He, however, expressed concern that such contributions had not been adequately recognised over time. He pointed to what he described as disparities in appointments and representation, arguing that merit and loyalty should be considered in political decisions.
Marafa added that patience and loyalty remain important virtues in politics, but should be matched with fairness and appreciation. He said silence should not always be mistaken for weakness, noting that it can reflect patience and strategic thinking.
NDC Welcomes Kabir Marafa, Eyes North-West Expansion
Receiving the former senator into the party, Dickson described Marafa as an experienced and principled politician whose entry would strengthen the Nigeria Democratic Congress in Zamfara State and across the North-West geopolitical zone.
He said Marafa is expected to provide leadership, mobilise grassroots support and contribute to the party’s agenda of inclusive governance. Dickson also stated that the party hopes to benefit from Marafa’s experience in addressing challenges such as insecurity, while promoting development through education, healthcare and infrastructure.
The NDC leader further disclosed that Marafa would participate actively in the party’s internal processes, including congresses, primaries and wider membership expansion efforts.
