President Erdoğan Blames Israel for Iran War as Turkey Steps Up Its Diplomatic Pressure

Turkish President Erdoğan has accused Israel of bearing primary responsibility for the war with Iran, describing the conflict as unlawful and warning that its consequences could spread far beyond the immediate battlefield. Erdoğan has repeatedly argued that Israeli actions were the principal trigger for the conflict and has called for diplomacy to prevent the fighting from becoming a wider regional catastrophe.

The Turkish president’s position has remained consistent even as diplomatic efforts have produced temporary agreements and attempts at de-escalation. Erdoğan welcomed the U.S.-Iran agreement in June as an important step toward peace, while warning that efforts to undermine the agreement could reignite tensions.

President Erdoğan Puts Israel at the Centre of the Blame

President Erdoğan has repeatedly placed Israel at the centre of his criticism, saying the Israeli government bears primary responsibility for the conflict and accusing it of pursuing policies that risk destabilizing the wider Middle East. In April, he warned that the war was not merely a bilateral confrontation but a crisis imposing economic and security costs on the wider international community.

By July, Erdoğan was still describing the Israeli government as “war-addicted” and accusing it of dragging the region toward instability. His statements have made clear that Ankara intends to remain outspoken about the conflict, even while presenting itself as a potential diplomatic actor.

In satirical Washington-and-Ankara fashion, Erdoğan appears to have opened a very large folder labelled “Reasons for the War,” placed Israel’s name prominently on the front, and invited the rest of the Middle East to add footnotes. The joke, however, sits on top of a very serious diplomatic dispute over who bears responsibility for the conflict and how it should end.

President Erdoğan Pushes Turkey as a Voice for Peace

President Erdoğan has simultaneously portrayed Turkey as an active participant in efforts to resolve regional crises rather than a passive observer. He has said Turkey wants regional countries to have a meaningful role in peace efforts and has emphasized diplomacy as the preferred route to lasting stability.

That position has given Turkey a complicated role in the crisis. Ankara is a NATO member and neighbour of Iran, while Erdoğan has maintained strong criticism of Israeli military operations. Turkey has also said it is closely monitoring diplomatic initiatives aimed at ending Israeli attacks and is prepared to contribute to regional stability.

The dispute over responsibility for the Iran war therefore remains deeply political, with Israel presenting a very different account of the conflict’s origins and military justification. Erdoğan’s accusations represent Ankara’s position, not an uncontested international finding. OGM News will continue monitoring President Erdoğan’s statements, Turkey’s diplomatic efforts and developments surrounding the Iran conflict as the regional story continues to unfold.
