NDLEA Crackdown Exposes Hidden Opioid Trafficking Network as Grandpa, Female Dealers and Young Suspects Fall in Nationwide Sweep

NDLEA Crackdown Exposes Hidden Opioid Trafficking Network as Grandpa, Female Dealers and Young Suspects Fall in Nationwide Sweep

The NDLEA Crackdown against Opioid Trafficking has delivered another dramatic chapter in Nigeria’s fight against illicit drugs after operatives intercepted a massive consignment of narcotics concealed beneath building materials in Taraba State while also arresting a 75-year-old suspect in Ebonyi and several alleged dealers across multiple states. The coordinated operations have sparked fresh discussion about the evolving tactics of drug cartels and the widening demographic profile of those allegedly involved in the trade.

75-Year-Old Suspect Arrested as NDLEA Expands Nationwide Drug Offensive

The most significant breakthrough occurred in Taraba State, where intelligence-driven operations led NDLEA officers to intercept a truck transporting building materials from Onitsha to Jalingo. Upon conducting a detailed search, operatives reportedly discovered a substantial cache of narcotics hidden beneath the cargo. The seizure included more than 320,000 capsules of tramadol, hundreds of pentazocine injections, thousands of rohypnol tablets, and hundreds of bottles of codeine-based cough syrup. A suspect identified as Buhari Abdullahi was arrested in connection with the shipment.

The NDLEA Crackdown also extended to several other states. In Ebonyi, a 75-year-old man was arrested after officers allegedly recovered skunk intended for retail sale. In Imo, a female suspect was apprehended during a raid on a known drug enclave. Similar operations in Edo led to the arrest of multiple suspects and the seizure of methamphetamine, Loud, Colorado, and other substances, while separate actions in Kano and Gombe resulted in additional arrests and narcotics recoveries. Officials described the operations as evidence that Opioid Trafficking networks continue to adapt their methods but remain vulnerable to coordinated intelligence gathering.

Thousands of Tramadol Capsules Seized in Major NDLEA Enforcement Drive

The latest seizures arrive amid growing national concern about opioid misuse and the illegal circulation of pharmaceutical products. Security analysts and public health advocates have repeatedly warned that tramadol and codeine-based products remain among the most frequently abused substances in several parts of Nigeria. Authorities have intensified surveillance of transport routes and commercial distribution channels as traffickers increasingly conceal narcotics within legitimate cargo shipments.

Beyond enforcement, the NDLEA has continued expanding its War Against Drug Abuse campaign through sensitization programmes in schools and communities nationwide. Recent awareness activities conducted in Oyo, Lagos, Anambra, Kano and other states reflect a strategy aimed at reducing demand while simultaneously disrupting supply chains. Observers note that the combination of education and enforcement is becoming increasingly important as Opioid Trafficking networks diversify recruitment methods and target younger populations.

The latest NDLEA Crackdown underscores both the scale of Nigeria’s drug challenge and the persistence of enforcement efforts across the country. While the recent arrests and seizures represent a significant disruption to suspected criminal networks, authorities maintain that the battle against Opioid Trafficking is far from over. OGM News Nigeria will continue monitoring developments, investigations, prosecutions, and future enforcement actions as officials seek to further dismantle the networks behind the illicit trade.
