Governors’ Camp Declares PDP Leaderless, Schedules BoT and NEC Meetings After Supreme Court Verdict

The governors-backed faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has declared that the party is currently without a recognised National Working Committee following the Supreme Court judgment that nullified previous leadership arrangements. The group said urgent meetings of the Board of Trustees (BoT) and the National Executive Committee (NEC) have been fixed to determine the next direction for the opposition party.

The announcement came after an expanded National Caucus meeting in Abuja, where party leaders said the ruling has created a vacuum at the top of the PDP. They insisted that the party’s constitutional organs must now step in quickly to restore order, prevent deeper division, and prepare the platform for future electoral contests.

Supreme Court Judgment Deepens PDP Leadership Crisis

The crisis followed two split Supreme Court decisions which nullified the PDP national convention held in Ibadan in November 2025. That convention had produced the Tanimu Turaki-led leadership, widely backed by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and other governors.

According to the court, the convention was conducted despite existing judicial orders restraining the party from proceeding unless certain conditions were met. The apex court criticised the party for ignoring clear directives and moving ahead with the exercise.

Party leaders in the governors’ camp argued that the judgment also affects the March 30, 2026 convention which produced another National Working Committee led by Abdulrahman Mohammed and backed by the camp associated with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike. They said the legal outcome has effectively removed both competing leadership structures, leaving the party without a central executive authority.

Board of Trustees Moves to Take Charge

Speaking after the caucus meeting, BoT National Secretary and former Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu said the PDP constitution empowers the Board of Trustees to take over in situations where the party lacks a National Working Committee.

He announced that the BoT would meet on Sunday, followed by a National Executive Committee meeting on Monday, where decisions would be taken on stabilising the party. Aliyu said the trustees have already assumed interim responsibility to guide the PDP through the current uncertainty.

BoT Chairman Adolphus Wabara also reportedly stated that the trustees had stepped in as a constitutional measure aimed at reconciliation, restoring stability, and rebuilding the party’s strength as a major opposition force in Nigeria.

Reconciliation Efforts and Focus on 2027 Elections

Aliyu said the PDP remains open to reconciliation and would invite aggrieved members and those who had left the party to return. He stressed that internal disagreements should not destroy a political platform that has played a major role in Nigeria’s democratic history.

He further declared that the PDP would not allow Nigeria to drift into a one-party state, insisting that a strong opposition remains necessary for democratic balance. According to him, efforts are already underway to engage stakeholders and reposition the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Those present at the Abuja meeting included Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, Tanimu Turaki, former PDP National Chairman Umar Damagum, former Information Minister Jerry Gana, lawmakers, and other senior party figures.
