Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, has described Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s endorsement of his governorship ambition as a significant vote of confidence ahead of the 2027 Lagos State governorship election. The endorsement, announced on Monday after a high-level meeting at Lagos House, Marina, is already shaping political conversations within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The development comes at a time when early political alignments are beginning to emerge ahead of the next election cycle. Hamzat, who has served as deputy governor since 2019, said he was honoured by the governor’s support and pledged to continue serving Lagos with dedication, integrity and focus.
Sanwo-Olu Declares Support for Hamzat
Governor Sanwo-Olu announced Hamzat as his preferred successor and APC candidate following a closed-door meeting attended by members of the Lagos State Executive Council and prominent party leaders. The gathering also included members of the Governor’s Advisory Council and other influential stakeholders within the party.
Addressing journalists after the meeting, Sanwo-Olu said the decision to endorse Hamzat was unanimous among those present. He described the deputy governor as competent, experienced and fully prepared to take over leadership of the state.
The governor praised Hamzat’s role in government over the past seven years, citing his loyalty, commitment and support. According to him, Hamzat has demonstrated the qualities required to lead a complex and fast-growing state like Lagos.
Dr Obafemi Hamzat Responds with Gratitude
Reacting to the endorsement, Dr Obafemi expressed appreciation to the governor through a message shared on social media. He said Sanwo-Olu’s trust meant a great deal to him, especially after years of working together in the service of Lagos State.
He added that he does not take the endorsement lightly and remains committed to building on the progress achieved by the current administration. Dr Obafemi also promised to serve Lagosians with a clear sense of purpose if given the opportunity.
Political observers see the statement as an attempt to project continuity, stability and readiness as the race for the 2027 governorship ticket begins to gather momentum.
Early APC Alignments Ahead of 2027
Sanwo-Olu’s backing for Hamzat reportedly follows similar endorsements from other notable APC figures, including Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, former governor Babatunde Fashola, and members of the Justice Forum political bloc.
The endorsement is widely seen as a major signal of internal consensus-building within the Lagos APC. While the party has yet to begin its formal primary process, such early declarations often influence negotiations, alliances and future campaign strategies.
However, Hamzat is not the only aspirant linked to the governorship race. Other names mentioned in political discussions include Abdul-Azeez Adediran, popularly known as Jandor, and Dr Samuel Ajose, also known as SMA Gold.
As political activities gradually intensify, the endorsement may mark the beginning of a broader contest over who will eventually emerge as the APC standard-bearer in one of Nigeria’s most politically significant states.
