Akpabio once again dominated Akwa Ibom’s political landscape after Godswill Akpabio emerged as the All Progressives Congress consensus candidate for Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial District ahead of the 2027 general elections. While supporters celebrated the development as proof of party unity and confidence in his leadership, critics argued that the absence of competition exposed growing concerns about the state of internal democracy within Nigeria’s major political parties.
The senatorial primary, held at Methodist School in Ukana West Two Ward of Essien Udim Local Government Area, attracted party faithful and supporters in large numbers. Yet the biggest surprise for many observers was not who won the contest, but the fact that there was effectively no contest at all. Even so, the Senate President still participated in the voting exercise alongside party members, creating what some political commentators jokingly described as “an election where the candidate politely competed against peace and harmony.”

Party officials and stakeholders described the APC primary as peaceful, orderly and transparent, insisting that the consensus arrangement reflected awidespread acceptance of Akpabio’s leadership within the district. According to supporters, the Senate President’s influence within the National Assembly and his long-standing political network made opposition within the party almost nonexistent.
Akpabio, while addressing party members after the exercise, expressed gratitude for what he called the continued trust and confidence reposed in him by constituents and APC supporters. He maintained that the process demonstrated unity within the party ahead of the next electoral cycle. Several loyalists also argued that consensus candidacy helps reduce internal conflict and strengthens party stability before major elections.

The emergence of Akpabio as an unchallenged candidate has nevertheless reopened broader conversations about the nature of internal democracy in Nigerian politics. Across several political parties in recent election cycles, consensus arrangements have increasingly replaced fiercely contested primaries, often leading to criticism from party members who believe competitive participation is being weakened in favor of elite agreements and political influence.
Political analysts observing developments in Akwa Ibom say the Senate President remains one of the most powerful political figures in the South-South region, with his influence stretching beyond the APC into wider national politics. His emergence may also signal an early consolidation strategy by the ruling party ahead of what is expected to become a highly competitive 2027 election season nationwide. Some observers believe opposition parties in the state may now intensify efforts to frame the APC as increasingly centralized around dominant political personalities.
As political activities gradually build toward 2027, the Consensus strategy surrounding Akpabio is likely to remain a major talking point both within Akwa Ibom and across Nigeria’s wider political environment. Whether supporters view it as unity or critics interpret it as political overconcentration, the development has already succeeded in placing the Senate President firmly at the center of another national political conversation.
