POLITICAL ALIGNMENT: As Nigeria’s political atmosphere dey gradually heat up ahead of the 2027 presidential election, former Labour Party National Chairman, Julius Abure, don make one declaration wey fit add another interesting chapter to the country’s opposition politics. Abure don openly reject the possibility of supporting Peter Obi, but e no close door against President Bola Tinubu or former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar.
The former party chairman also threaten to mobilise his supporters against Obi, accusing the former Anambra State governor of wasting the political goodwill and organisational structure wey help am perform strongly during the 2023 presidential election. But as Abure dey consider where to pitch him political tent, one pending Supreme Court case still dey hang over the Labour Party leadership dispute.
POLITICAL ALIGNMENT: ABURE DRAWS THE LINE AGAINST PETER OBI
During an interview, Abure explain say he dey wait for the Supreme Court to determine the ongoing leadership dispute involving the Labour Party. According to am, if the judgment no come before the end of November, e go begin consider offers from interested political candidates. However, e make am clear say any political arrangement must agree with his interests, ideology and the acceptability of the candidate involved.
Abure specifically mention President Bola Tinubu and former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar as people wey he fit consider working with, while firmly ruling out Peter Obi. E also insist say any final decision no go concern only am, because the interests of his supporters must enter the calculation. In other words, political support no be free Christmas rice wey anybody fit collect without agreement!
Abure further accuse Obi of destroying the political goodwill, human resources and organisational structure wey contributed to his strong performance during the 2023 presidential election. He claim say Obi’s departure from the Labour Party don weaken the political machinery wey helped am secure more than six million votes in the previous presidential contest. The former chairman also promise to mobilise supporters against Obi, arguing that the former governor’s handling of the party’s internal disagreements raise questions about his ability to manage a larger political organisation like Nigeria.
Abure also criticise Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, accusing him and Obi of contributing to the collapse of the party structure under his leadership. However, these allegations represent Abure’s own position in the ongoing political disagreement, not an independently established verdict on Obi’s leadership abilities.
POLITICAL ALIGNMENT: LABOUR PARTY CRISIS, SUPREME COURT BATTLE AND THE 2027 CALCULATION
To understand the latest disagreement, Nigerians need remember say the Labour Party leadership crisis no begin today. The conflict between Abure and the camp associated with Peter Obi and Governor Alex Otti involve disagreements over party leadership, the conduct of the national convention and control of the party’s organisational structure. In January 2026, the Federal High Court in Abuja ruled against Abure’s continued leadership and recognised the caretaker committee led by Senator Nenadi Usman as the legitimate authority pending the party’s national convention.
The Court of Appeal subsequently upheld the position in April 2026, while Abure rejected the decision and announced plans to challenge the judgment at the Supreme Court. This legal disagreement explains why Abure says the outcome of the pending case will influence his political calculations.
Meanwhile, Peter Obi don establish himself under the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), where e emerge as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 election, with Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as his running mate. The party don also begin preparations for the campaign, with its National Campaign Council unveiled on October 27, 2026. Former Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, was named chairman of the council, while Obi was appointed co-chairman and Kwankwaso co-vice-chairman.
The arrangement show say the NDC don already begin organise its campaign machinery rather than wait for political support from Abure. Reacting to the former Labour Party chairman’s declaration, NDC Presidential Campaign Council spokesperson Constance Ikokwu dismissed the comments, saying Obi remained focused on the 2027 election. Obi’s media aide, Idris Zekeri, also maintained that the campaign had moved on from Abure and was concentrating on winning the election.
As the 2027 presidential contest approaches, Abure’s declaration raises another important question about the value of political structures, party loyalty and the influence of individual politicians. The former chairman believes the supporters and organisational network associated with his leadership can still make a difference, but whether those structures remain strong enough to influence the election is something voters and political observers will have to assess.
Tinubu, Atiku and Obi already have their respective political platforms and campaign arrangements, meaning any new alliance must offer more than public declarations to become electorally significant. For now, Abure says Obi is out of his political plans, while Tinubu and Atiku remain possible partners. Whether either candidate will actually welcome his proposed alliance remains another matter entirely. One thing be clear: Nigeria’s political season don enter another interesting chapter, and this POLITICAL ALIGNMENT drama fit get more episodes before voters finally decide who deserves their mandate. We go bring una further updates as the political calculations continue.
