ADC Accuses APC of Admitting Defeat on Insecurity as Yari’s Remark Raises Questions About Tinubu’s 2027 Bid

ADC Accuses APC of Admitting Defeat on Insecurity as Yari’s Remark Raises Questions About Tinubu’s 2027 Bid

The African Democratic Congress Presidential Campaign Council (ADC-PCC) has accused the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of failing to adequately address Nigeria’s persistent security challenges, arguing that a reported remark by Senator Abdulaziz Yari, Director-General of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council, has raised uncomfortable questions about the ruling party’s confidence in its own security strategy.

Yari was reportedly quoted as asking: “If Buhari, who is a retired military man, could not wipe out insecurity, what can Tinubu do?” The ADC-PCC interpreted the statement as an admission of helplessness from a senior figure entrusted with promoting Tinubu’s re-election campaign. In the political theatre ahead of the 2027 presidential election, the opposition appears to have found a line it considers more powerful than a dozen campaign slogans: a question allegedly coming from the ruling party’s own camp.

ADC Says APC Has Run Out of Answers on National Security

In a statement signed by its Director of Media and Publicity, Kola Ologbondiyan, the ADC-PCC argued that Nigerians deserve more than explanations for the continued insecurity affecting communities across the country. The council questioned why the APC should seek another four-year mandate when terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and killings remain serious concerns for many citizens. Its argument is straightforward: if a government wants another term, it must convince voters that it can protect their lives and property.

The opposition council also contended that Yari’s reported remark undermines the confidence the APC should be trying to build ahead of the next election. Politically, the statement creates an awkward situation for a ruling party whose campaign leadership is expected to project competence, determination and a convincing plan for the future. In the ADC-PCC’s telling, the question is no longer simply whether insecurity can be defeated, but whether the APC can persuade Nigerians that it has a credible strategy for doing so.

Tinubu’s Security Challenge Becomes a 2027 Campaign Test

Nigeria’s security crisis has remained a major issue under successive administrations. The country continues to face different threats, including insurgency in parts of the North-East, banditry and mass kidnappings in parts of the North-West and North-Central regions, and attacks on communities in other areas. Former President Muhammadu Buhari’s military background did not prevent insecurity from persisting during his administration, but that history alone does not establish that the current president cannot improve the situation. The real test is whether the government can deliver measurable improvements in public safety.

The ADC-PCC has presented its presidential candidate, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, as an alternative, pointing to proposals involving modern policing, intelligence-led operations, technology, better coordination among security agencies and employment opportunities for young people. These proposals form part of the opposition’s political argument, and their effectiveness would depend on implementation, resources and accountability. Meanwhile, the APC faces the challenge of explaining its security record and demonstrating what it intends to do differently. For voters, campaign rhetoric may attract attention, but results on the ground will matter far more.

In conclusion, Yari’s reported comment has become a political talking point that the ADC-PCC believes exposes a weakness in the APC’s campaign message on insecurity. Whether the remark reflects genuine doubts within the ruling party or has been interpreted by the opposition for political advantage remains a matter requiring context and verification. What is clear is that security will remain a crucial test for President Tinubu’s administration and every party seeking power in 2027.
