Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, has reportedly described former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi as his friend and brother, insisting that their differences are rooted in political ideology and strategy rather than personal hostility.
“Peter Obi is my friend and brother, and our families share a close relationship. Our only differences are in political ideology and strategy,” Soludo was quoted as saying.
The statement has renewed public interest in the relationship between the two prominent political figures, whose political positions and public disagreements have frequently attracted attention. Their relationship raises a broader question about whether political differences should be interpreted as personal enmity, particularly when former political allies pursue different visions for Nigeria.
SOLUDO–OBI RELATIONSHIP: FRIENDSHIP BEYOND POLITICAL DISAGREEMENTS
Soludo and Obi have both governed Anambra State, but their political approaches and affiliations have differed. Soludo is associated with the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), while Obi contested the 2023 presidential election under the Labour Party.
In November 2022, Channels Television reported Soludo as saying that there was no personal rift between them and that their differences were fundamentally political. He also rejected allegations that he had received a bribe to criticise Obi, challenging those making the allegations to provide evidence.
The reported statement about their friendship therefore brings renewed attention to the distinction between political competition and personal relationships. While politicians may disagree over policy, party affiliation, leadership priorities and electoral strategy, such disagreements do not necessarily establish that personal relationships have broken down.
POLITICAL IDEOLOGY OR PERSONAL RIVALRY? THE DEBATE CONTINUES
The relationship between the two politicians has attracted renewed attention amid public debate over Anambra’s finances and the political direction of the state. In September 2026, Premium Times reported that Obi described his relationship with Soludo as close while discussing their connection at the Nigerian Guild of Editors’ conference in Enugu.
However, the debate has also demonstrated the importance of distinguishing personal relationships from political disagreements. Public statements from politicians can be interpreted differently by supporters, critics and political observers, making it important to examine the actual words spoken and the evidence surrounding them.
Soludo’s reported remarks present a clear message: political differences should not automatically be treated as proof of personal hostility. Whether the public accepts that explanation will depend partly on how both men communicate and conduct their political engagements going forward.
OGM News NG will continue to follow developments concerning the relationship between the two political figures and other important issues shaping Nigerian politics.
