Peter Obi: “I’ll Never Abuse Tinubu, He Has My Respect”

NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi has said he will never abuse or personally insult President Bola Tinubu, stressing that the Nigerian leader has his respect despite their political differences. Obi made the remarks at the 2026 All Nigeria Editors’ Conference in Enugu.

Obi said political disagreements should focus on policies, decisions and performance rather than personal attacks. He maintained that respecting a public office holder does not mean avoiding criticism of the government or refusing to question its actions.

Peter Obi said he had never abused Tinubu or other government officials and questioned why political disagreements should descend into personal attacks. He noted that Tinubu occupies the office of President and therefore deserves respect.

The former Anambra State governor, however, made it clear that respect does not prevent him from challenging government policies. He said citizens and the media have the right to argue over whether those in government are performing well or making appropriate decisions.

Obi’s comments come against the background of Nigeria’s increasingly competitive political environment ahead of the 2027 general elections. His statement does not indicate an end to political disagreement with the Tinubu administration; rather, he distinguished criticism of government policies from personal abuse.

The remarks also place emphasis on the role of the media in holding political leaders accountable.
