The Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Oyo State has replaced Michael Okunlade with Mogaji Olusegun Agboola as its governorship candidate for the 2027 election, in a move that has added another twist to the increasingly active political contest in the state. The substitution was ratified at a plenary in Ibadan on Tuesday, with the party declaring that its ticket was not available for political negotiation.
The development is particularly interesting because Agboola had only recently emerged publicly as an SDP governorship hopeful, while Okunlade had earlier been reported as the party’s consensus candidate. In Nigerian politics, where tickets can sometimes generate more suspense than the election itself, the SDP has now made clear that its latest decision is intended to move the party into the next phase of its 2027 campaign.
SDP Says the Ticket Is Not a Political Bargaining Chip
Agboola has wasted little time in setting the tone for his campaign, insisting that the SDP is not entering the 2027 contest merely to negotiate political relevance. He said the party wants to win the governorship and introduce a different approach to governance, including replacing what he called “pedestrian thinking” with system-based thinking.
In the emerging SDP script, there will apparently be no “ticket for sale” sign hanging outside the party office. Agboola said the ticket was not open to political negotiation and expressed readiness to debate other governorship contenders on their policies. He also promised an open-door approach for aggrieved members, while the party tasked him with uniting its ranks and expanding its structures across Oyo’s 33 local government areas.
From Candidate Change to a Test of Political Strength
The change also comes with a warning from Okunlade, who congratulated Agboola and urged him to remain committed to the party. Okunlade said the SDP needed visibility, unity, commitment and effective grassroots mobilisation, summarising the party’s ambition in a particularly political formula: “victory, not negotiation; commitment, not abandonment; unity, not division.”
Behind the satirical headlines, however, lies a serious political test. The SDP will have to translate its promises of system-based governance, human development and sustainable economic opportunities into an organised grassroots campaign. The party has also faced internal disagreements over its nomination process, making unity particularly important as the 2027 contest approaches. Earlier reports show that Agboola formally joined the party in August and had already been advocating fresh ideas and systemic change before becoming its standard-bearer.
For now, the SDP has changed its driver, declared that the ticket is not on the bargaining table and pointed its political vehicle toward the State House. Whether the new candidate can unite the party, build the promised structures and convert the SDP’s “new approach” into electoral momentum will be one of the questions to watch as Oyo’s 2027 political drama unfolds.
