Ademola Adeleke Says His Support for Tinubu Is Based on Yoruba and South-West Identity

Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has reportedly offered a rather unusual explanation for his support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, suggesting that the backing is rooted more in regional and ethnic solidarity than in any political agreement between the two men. In the latest twist to the increasingly colourful political relationship, Adeleke is quoted as saying that he never reached an agreement with the President and that his support is simply because Tinubu is a Yoruba man from the South-West.

The statement adds another layer to a political relationship that has already raised eyebrows across Osun and beyond. In March 2026, Ademola Adeleke publicly said there was “no problem” between him and President Tinubu and reaffirmed his support for the President’s 2027 re-election, describing Tinubu as a South-West leader.

By June, Adeleke had again endorsed Tinubu while launching his own re-election campaign, describing his support for the President as “unshaken and total.” The latest remark, however, gives that support a distinctly regional flavour, leaving political observers wondering whether the alliance is built on policy, personal understanding, party strategy—or simply the geographical map of Nigeria.

Ademola Adeleke: When Politics Meets Geography

The situation becomes even more interesting because Adeleke has remained politically separate from Tinubu’s governing party while backing the President’s return in 2027. Earlier reports showed that political figures in Osun have similarly linked the support to Tinubu’s Yoruba identity and the interests of the South-West.

That arrangement has already attracted political criticism. In July 2026, Accord presidential candidate Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim’s support group warned that Adeleke could risk his own political fortunes by supporting Tinubu, illustrating just how complicated the governor’s balancing act has become.

For now, the Ademola Adeleke-Tinubu relationship appears to be one of Nigeria’s more unusual political equations: support without agreement, endorsement without party alignment, and loyalty explained largely through regional identity. Whether the arrangement survives the next phase of Nigeria’s political drama remains a story to watch, as OGM News NG continues to monitor developments and bring readers the latest updates.
