Minister David Umahi Fires Back at Critics- "They Obidient Us, We Tinubu Them"

Minister of Works, David Umahi, has declared that supporters of President Bola Tinubu will vigorously defend the administration against what he described as a deliberate campaign by some individuals to undermine the government’s achievements. In a strongly worded political statement, Umahi alleged that certain groups were creating and promoting content designed to discredit President Tinubu’s performance, insisting that such efforts would not go unanswered.

Speaking in a combative tone, the former Ebonyi State governor said supporters of the President were prepared to match every criticism with an equally forceful response. His now widely circulated remark, “We sharpen our mouth, they tackle us, we tackle them. They Obidient us, we Tinubu them, we Asiwaju them,” has since generated widespread discussion across Nigeria’s political landscape and on social media.

David Umahi Defends Tinubu, Alleges Coordinated Campaign to Undermine Government

David Umahi argued that there is a committed effort by unnamed individuals to undermine what he described as the “great work” being carried out by President Tinubu’s administration. According to the minister, supporters of the government would continue defending the administration’s policies, projects and reforms whenever they believe misleading narratives are being circulated.

The remarks reflect the increasingly confrontational nature of Nigeria’s political communication, where supporters of rival political movements frequently engage in vigorous exchanges online and offline. Umahi’s reference to “Obidient” was widely interpreted as an allusion to supporters of Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, while “Asiwaju” refers to President Tinubu’s well-known political title. His comments have further fuelled conversations about the growing influence of political branding and social media activism in shaping public opinion.

David Umahi Vows to Counter Critics of President Tinubu

The minister’s comments come at a time when the Tinubu administration continues to defend its economic reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidies, foreign exchange reforms, infrastructure development and ongoing road construction projects across the country. Government officials have repeatedly argued that many of the reforms are difficult but necessary for Nigeria’s long-term economic stability, while opposition figures have continued to criticise the impact of those policies on the cost of living.

Political observers note that public debate surrounding the administration has become increasingly polarised, with supporters highlighting infrastructure investments, increased revenue generation and efforts to stabilise the economy, while critics point to inflation, rising food prices and broader economic hardship facing many Nigerians. Social media has become one of the principal arenas where these competing narratives are promoted and challenged daily.

Umahi, who oversees several major federal road and bridge projects, has consistently defended the Tinubu administration’s infrastructure agenda, describing it as one of the most ambitious in recent years. His latest comments reinforce the administration’s broader communication strategy of actively responding to criticism while encouraging supporters to promote what government officials consider the achievements of President Tinubu’s presidency.

As political activities gradually build towards the 2027 general elections, exchanges between supporters of the ruling party and opposition movements are expected to become even more pronounced. Whether through policy debates, public statements or online campaigns, the contest for public opinion is likely to remain a defining feature of Nigeria’s political environment, with figures such as David Umahi continuing to play prominent roles in defending the government’s agenda.
