Ayo Wisdom: President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Signs Major Overhaul of NYSC Operations

Ayo Wisdom, the Minister of Youth Development, has announced a comprehensive reform of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) following approval by the Federal Executive Council (FEC). The reforms, endorsed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, are designed to modernise the scheme, improve the welfare and security of corps members, and better align national service with the country’s economic and technological priorities.

Providing an update on the newly approved reforms, Ayo Wisdom said the changes represent a significant step towards transforming the NYSC into a more efficient, technology-driven, and skills-oriented institution capable of preparing young Nigerians for today’s competitive workforce while preserving the scheme’s role in promoting national unity.

FEC Approves New NYSC Reforms Focused on Skills and Security

According to Ayo Wisdom, one of the major reforms is the introduction of a technology-driven call-up process aimed at improving transparency, efficiency, and the overall management of corps member mobilisation nationwide.
The minister also disclosed that the government has approved a risk-sensitive deployment policy to ensure corps members are posted with greater consideration for prevailing security conditions across the country. In addition, the traditional three-week orientation programme will be expanded into a revamped six-week exercise focusing on leadership development, entrepreneurship, digital skills, innovation, and career preparation.

The reforms further introduce skills-based primary assignments, allowing corps members to be deployed according to their qualifications, competencies, and professional expertise, with the objective of increasing productivity and creating greater value for host organisations.

Ayo Wisdom also announced that the NYSC will now operate under a civilian-led administrative structure, while the military will continue to provide security support during orientation camps and other operational activities involving corps members.

As part of the broader restructuring, the government has approved a grading and certification system for NYSC orientation camps to improve accommodation, healthcare, sanitation, and other welfare facilities. The reforms also provide for a new graduation ceremony to formally recognise corps members at the completion of their national service year, alongside the introduction of a redesigned NYSC uniform.
To facilitate the implementation of these reforms, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Minister of Youth Development to commence immediate amendments to the NYSC Act, providing the necessary legal framework for the new policies.

Policy analysts say the reforms reflect the Federal Government’s broader efforts to reposition the NYSC as a platform for youth empowerment, entrepreneurship, digital innovation, and national development. Many observers also believe that matching corps members’ skills with their places of primary assignment could improve service delivery and enhance employability after national service.

As implementation begins, stakeholders across the education, public, and private sectors are expected to monitor how effectively the reforms improve corps members’ experience and contribute to Nigeria’s long-term human capital development. OGM News Nigeria will continue to follow developments surrounding the implementation of the new NYSC reform agenda.
