Curfew Politics? Oyo Residents Ordered Indoors as Oriire Abduction Forces Emergency Measures

The Curfew announced by the Oyo State Government has reignited debate over how far authorities should go in responding to worsening insecurity, after Governor Seyi Makinde approved a 16-hour restriction across ten local government areas following abduction-related concerns in Oriire. For residents already grappling with uncertainty, the decision has raised fresh questions about whether emergency restrictions represent decisive leadership or an acknowledgement that criminal networks continue to exploit difficult terrains beyond the reach of conventional policing.

Curfew Measures In 10 Local Government

According to information obtained by OGM News Nigeria from trusted sources, the state government approved a temporary curfew running daily from 4 p.m. until 8 a.m., beginning on June 24, 2026. The measure is expected to remain in place for an initial period of 48 hours and affects Oriire, Orelope, Irepo, Saki West, Saki East, Atisbo, Itesiwaju, Iseyin, Olorunsogo and Atiba local government areas. Authorities said the decision was taken to strengthen security operations and preserve public order in communities surrounding the Old Oyo National Park.

Government officials have urged residents to comply fully with the restrictions and cooperate with security personnel. Although the directive is temporary, businesses, transport operators and farmers within affected communities may experience disruptions as movement becomes limited during most evening and early morning hours.

Oriire Crisis Intensify 16hour Curfew

The Oriire abduction incident has remained a source of anxiety in Oyo State for several weeks. Governor Makinde previously disclosed that intelligence reports suggested abducted pupils and teachers were still being held somewhere within the wider Old Oyo National Park axis, an expansive forest area spanning roughly 2,500 square kilometres and touching parts of the ten affected local government areas. The challenging terrain has reportedly complicated rescue efforts despite continued security operations.

Before the latest curfew announcement, the state government had already introduced additional security measures, including restrictions on commercial motorcycle operations during late-night hours. The governor has repeatedly assured families of abductees that every lawful measure is being deployed to secure their release, while emphasising that patience and strategic coordination remain essential in hostage rescue operations.

For now, residents are left balancing hope with inconvenience as security agencies intensify efforts within the forest corridors. Whether the Curfew ultimately weakens criminal networks or merely exposes longstanding gaps in rural security architecture may become clearer in the coming days. OGM News Nigeria will continue monitoring developments surrounding the Oriire crisis and provide updates as new information emerges.
