Dumebi Kachikwu, the 2023 presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has sharply criticised emerging presidential aspirants within the party, describing them as individuals driven by personal ambition rather than a commitment to national development. Speaking during a press conference in Abuja, he also questioned the legitimacy of a recent party convention, alleging it was conducted in defiance of a standing court order.
Allegations of Self-Interest Among Aspirants
Dumebi Kachikwu stated that several individuals positioning themselves as presidential hopefuls under the ADC banner lack the capacity and vision required to address Nigeria’s pressing challenges. According to him, their actions suggest a focus on personal political gain rather than service to the electorate.
He described the aspirants as “desperate politicians,” arguing that their approach undermines the credibility of the party. Kachikwu maintained that political leadership should be rooted in integrity, competence, and a genuine desire to improve the welfare of citizens, qualities he implied were lacking among the current contenders.
The former candidate further warned that such internal dynamics could weaken the party’s standing ahead of future elections, stressing the need for discipline and adherence to democratic principles within party ranks.
Dumebi Kachikwu Controversy Over ADC Convention
Kachikwu also raised concerns about the national convention reportedly organised by a faction of the party led by David Mark. He alleged that the event proceeded despite a court order that had halted its conduct, thereby questioning its legality and legitimacy.
According to him, disregarding judicial directives sets a dangerous precedent and erodes respect for the rule of law within political institutions. He emphasised that political parties, as key pillars of democracy, must operate within established legal frameworks.
The development highlights ongoing internal disputes within the ADC, with factions reportedly divided over leadership and strategic direction. Observers note that such disagreements could have broader implications for the party’s cohesion and electoral prospects.
Implications for Party Unity and Future Elections
The criticisms by Dumebi Kachikwu underscore deeper tensions within the ADC, raising questions about its preparedness for upcoming political contests. Analysts suggest that unresolved leadership disputes and allegations of procedural violations may hinder the party’s ability to present a unified front.
Kachikwu called for adherence to due process and urged party members to prioritise collective interest over individual ambition. He stressed that rebuilding trust within the party is essential for maintaining relevance in Nigeria’s competitive political landscape.
As internal disagreements continue to unfold, the ADC faces the challenge of reconciling divergent interests while strengthening its institutional credibility ahead of future elections.
