ABUJA — The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has rejected claims by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) that it was denied access to Eagle Square for its convention, insisting that no formal application was submitted. Wike also reassured residents over the structural integrity of the Kugbo Bus Terminal and provided updates on ongoing infrastructure projects across Abuja.
Dispute Over Eagle Square Access
Wike described allegations by the ADC as unfounded, stating that the Federal Capital Territory Administration has not received any official request from the party to use Eagle Square. According to him, access to the venue is not restricted to any group, provided due process is followed.
Wike emphasised that all organisations intending to use the facility must submit formal applications through the Abuja Investments Company Limited (AICL), the body responsible for managing the venue, and pay the required fees. Without fulfilling these requirements, he noted, no group can legitimately claim to have been denied access.
Wike further dismissed the claims as attempts to attract public sympathy, adding that previous users of the venue, including major political parties, adhered strictly to the established procedures.
Wike Clarification on Venue Ownership and Procedures
Addressing reports that the ADC was also denied use of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium Velodrome, Wike clarified that the facility does not fall under the jurisdiction of the FCT Administration. Instead, it is managed by the National Sports Commission (NSC).
He reiterated that the administration does not discriminate against any group or political party, stressing that compliance with laid-down guidelines remains the only requirement for access to public facilities. According to him, both the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party had successfully used such venues in the past by following due process.
Wike maintained that adherence to proper procedures ensures transparency, accountability, and fairness in the use of government-owned infrastructure.
Kugbo Terminal Repairs and Infrastructure Progress
On public concerns regarding the Kugbo Bus Terminal, Wike clarified that the damage recently reported was limited to roofing sheets affected by a windstorm, not a structural collapse. He explained that the elevated location of the terminal made it vulnerable to strong winds, but assured residents that the building itself remains intact.
Wike confirmed that repair works are already ongoing and urged the public to disregard reports suggesting a collapse, noting that no casualties were recorded. The minister emphasised the importance of accurate information to prevent unnecessary panic.
Wike also expressed satisfaction with the progress of several infrastructure projects across the FCT. He announced that ongoing road works are expected to be completed by May 15, while installation of streetlights will conclude by May 31. Additionally, he inspected the Wassa artisan site, a facility designed to relocate mechanics and informal workers into a more organised environment, fulfilling a long-standing government commitment.
The minister attributed the steady pace of development projects to effective collaboration between the government and contractors, noting that timely payments have encouraged adherence to deadlines. Wike assured residents that the administration remains committed to delivering critical infrastructure while maintaining transparency in public facility management.
